Reader's Poll Best of Jackson Hole 2009

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

By PJH Staff

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-The people and places included in this issue are the verybest of Jackson Hole . . . at least for now.  Next year, you might vote for completely different “winners”in completely different categories. Our editorial picks might be the result of a thoughtful and deliberate consensus, rather than the ephemeral musings ofindividual contributors. Who knows!

Clearly, the process is not perfect – we’ve done our bestto scold and undo ballot stuffers – however, we think that the point of a BestOf issue is less to give a reading of local faves than to remember and recognize the many people who make Jackson “unique,” the bars where we have made mistakes, the musicians who have described the mood, the restaurants where wemeet friends and escape bars, the shops we frequent for beta as well as gearand the people we write home about, even the ones we’d like to set straight –in short, a Best Of issue is a survey of the social-political atmosphere of our town, a look at who we are, and at the very least, a Best Of is fun to thumb through, if only to ridicule other people’s

taste.

On that point, we definitely have our own favorites, and some of us think that the youth of Jackson Hole had much higher voter-turnout (must be Obama’s influence), but we are collectively satisfied that in many cases Jackson demonstrated its good taste for all things (truly) local.

So thanks for participating in our inaugural Best Ofissue. Enjoy!

Best landlord?

Best French Fries - McDonald's This may invalidate all of the other results
Reality Bias

Best Gay Hangout winners are the real winners, and lots of people voted on this category. No businesses were removed from the list. There was software that calculated the totals so the winning businesses were not altered in any way.
MG, publisher

I'm impressed by the Terra Resort Group / Gavin Fine conglomorate's ability to mobilize voters. BTW, everyone knows best gay hangout is the virg. Its like our version of the Blue Oyster Club from Police Academy.
Carl

Thanks for pointing out that Best Gay Hangout had not made it to this online list. The error has been corrected, and so the original comment highlighting the it has been deleted, along with the several derogatory and ridiculous responses thereafter.
PJH

the roger freedman and gavin fine teams have forever changed the face of the jackson hole restaurant industry, all for the better. they are also two of the kindest and most patient men that town has to offer, roger is a mentor like no other, gavin coached soccer for fun then booked out the private dining room in the bistro for the kids and never let anyone pay a dime. your lucky you have them jackson hole
matty

I was disappointed to see so many sexist undertones to your "Best of" guide, for example the opening line of the "Best Rack" category and the "Best Girl-on-Girl" action. It's just plain insulting to women and by printing it, you risk alienating some of your readers, not to mention it's just in bad taste. I've heard your only full-time female staff writer has been let go, leaving you with only men in your newsroom. Is the Planet turning into just another publication geared toward 20-something male skids?
The Girls

I agree with The Girls. The sexual (I wouldn't say 'sexist' 'cause I don't know what the hell that means) comments were crude, juvenile, vacuous, and really unworthy of print. someone needs to step up at the Planet and cut that kind of shit out.
little saganaga

irony (noun): 2 a: the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning.
MJI

Sorry, but it's still crude and juvenile, and calling it "irony" doesn't excuse it.
little saganaga

What a Joke, You never cease to amaze Planet JackHole
The NiteHawk

This has to be the most profitable event of your calendar year. Get a few people to vote, and then 'hold-up' local businesses to spend hundreds of dollars thanking those few voters by buying ads. There really should be a disclaimer. I know a number of business owners who call this just what it is... a money-making scheme...
Greg

How is this line irony?: Best Rack - It’s difficult to determine the owner of this accolade, amid many valley females’ loose-fitting, triple-insulated ski jackets, so instead, we’ll give a nod to the other type of rack, once donned with a fleece as white as snow. There is no irony there. It's offensive to women. Period. Maybe you should have had a "Best Meatballs" entry.
The Girls

The Girls are absolutely right. But I would add, that it's offensive not only to women, but to any sensitive human being. That's why I hesitate to call it "sexist". I would hope that if the same crudeness were applied to the male anatomy, that The Girls would also be offended. It's a Human, common decency issue.
little saganaga

Best Rack was offensive. Typical republican newspaper, everythign comesback tomen dominating women and seeing them as things..visa-vi Chhenny & Feinstein... same same.
