Students evacuated Colter Elementary School on Monday afternoon in response to a bomb threat in the form of graffiti.
"Training in the Salt Lake City area two years ago was specific to bomb threat response and terrorist attack procedures."
"We are holding on to the specifics" of the threatening message
written, said Sgt. Todd Smith. "To release that kind of information
would make the case hard to solve."
Colter Elementary reopened its doors to students on Tuesday. Jackson
Police Department has conducted interviews with students and an
investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the crime.
The bomb threat was the first of the school year but follows a string
of bomb threats in recent years. Smith said the department was well
prepared to respond to the emergency. Training in the Salt Lake City
area two years ago was specific to bomb threat response and terrorist
attack procedures. Subsequently, the department "created a protocol
upon which to act" when faced with situations like Monday's bomb threat.
Working with an official from the School resource office, emergencies
of this kind are handled at the local level, Smith said. The sergeant
also said that although Teton County Sheriff's Office deputies were
available to help, "We had enough personnel," to handle the situation.
