Jackson Hole, Wyo.-“Let’s Party,” declares a hot girl in a blue skirt, matching bikini top and black tights.
Girls – get ready. Guys – get your mind out of the gutter. She’s just a girl on a flier inviting you to see some homegrown Jackson fashion that isn’t the usual hoodies or beenies.
The second fashion show at the Mangy Moose this year will premier Gillian Mahin and Laura Hall’s first collection of women’s clothing under their new label, “For Love and Lemons.”
In their partnership, forged at an Aspens lemonade stand, Mahin is the creative energy and Hall is the business smarts, the pair says. After surviving Jackson Hole High School together, they spent most of college apart; Hall studied marketing in Boulder and Mahin studied fashion in Los Angeles.
Mahin and Hall started L&L this winter after returning from Sydney, Australia where fashion and lifestyle go hand in hand. Girls on beach cruisers wore local and small-time designers while vintage 70s and 80s styles adorned men and women alike, they said.
“Everyone there is so happy, and everyone wants to have fun,” Mahin said. “They play before work … and they play after work.”
But the laid-back lifestyle was also motivating, Hall said. The fashion scene didn’t require tons of cash or connections to get started, which made the dream of designing seem more attainable. They returned from Sydney, started experimenting, and realized the long Jackson winter would afford time to create their own fashion line.
Their styles are bright and free, but can be classy and even dressy, they said. Mahin explained that a bright, colorful print skirt could go over a swimsuit with flip-flops during the daytime or be “dressed up” to go out at night.
Hall described the look as “boho meets 50s,” which Mahin said suited Jackson. Boho refers to clothes influenced by 70s bohemian and hippie styles.
“We’re going for the 50s pinup-girl style, but in a way that you can wear,” Mahin said. “A lot of this stuff is Jackson-wearable.”
Their line will go to production in Bali this spring. PJH
The show starts at 6 p.m., Friday, at the Mangy Moose Saloon. It will also feature art by local artists, such as Ryan Haworth and Brian Iguchi, and tunes spun by Rocky Vertone.
