Tea parties spill principles, not tea

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Two tea parties held on tax day, Wednesday, will not dress up like Indians nor throw tea into Flat Creek. Instead, they will wave signs and pick up garbage to promote their positions on liberty, taxes and the size of government.

Todd Graus and Shepard Humphries have organized two separate but related protests, one at noon on Cutty’s lawn, at the intersection of Highway 22 and Broadway, and one at 4:30 p.m. at the Village Inn Parking lot, 100 Flat Creek Dr.
The noon affair will be a political rally, with a prize for the best sign. The afternoon affair calls on guerilla volunteers to pick up garbage to demonstrate that citizens can provide the same services currently offered by big government, Humphries said.

Humphries and Graus consider themselves conservative, but neither necessarily support the actions of the Republican Party. They said participants will come from all political parties.

Humphries emphasized that more people are pro-liberty than they think.
“I think every single person in the valley, to some degree, has that basic American passion and love for liberty,” Humphries said. “We can disagree about whether an apple or banana tastes better, but we’re still going to agree to give people liberty to do something, even if someone thinks it’s really stupid.”

His idea of liberty might be considered radical, he said, but in today’s world anyone with principles is radical.

“I think that everyone in our community, if we truly search our heart of hearts, we are radical in many ways,” Humphries said. “That’s what makes us humans instead of robots.” PJH

Will the Trash Cleanup happen if weather is lousy?........ YES! If we can't see the trash - we will simply march! :) http://rlc.meetup.com/100/calendar/10142635/

I live in Star Valley and we're also having a tea party. It has been gratifying for me to see how many people have come forward to speak for liberty. We are not alone. Love for liberty is alive and well in Wyoming! Thank you PJH for a great article.

Shepard and Todd, thanks for having the courage to sponsor these events. Also thanks to Village Inn for allowing you to use its property to promote liberty. I will be attending another TEA party in Casper at noon today. I hope our simple message is heard by our fellow Americans, not just the ones who watch independent or conservative media. We are speaking for ALL Americans today, even the ones who disagree with us.

The idea of liberty and freedom are etched on the history of this country. We see it nearly everywhere we turn: on our currency, in songs, in business names, in the names of of towns and cities. Many of us recognize that freedom isn't simply something that we talk about - we live it every day. Let's remember that it takes courage to be free, and it takes exceptional courage to let others be free, and that's the kind of freedom that matters most.

Thanks Planet Jackson for covering the Tea Parties. Good job Shepard and Todd. Its time to take back our Country from the Global Corporate Government or loose it forever. The banksters have ripped us off and now want us to pay them for stealing our money with interest. What a ludicrous concept!

I hope the government gives these protests the respect that they are due. This country is in dire need of a review of our founding principals of liberty and limited government.

I'm simultaneously embarrassed for you and embarrassed by you. I paid a visit to your little "tea party" and was shocked by the simplistic and naive platitudes being dished up. Where were you when our liberties were TRULY being threatened? Where were you when capitalism was TRULY being dismantled and government expanded?? What a shameful hypocrisy! Even the Heavens chose to dump on you today! I can understand how conservative republicans of a certain stripe would be duped into this media event, but it is sorely disappointing to see self-styled libertarians join this ugly bandwagon. I humbly ask that the so-called libertarians in this group refrain from calling themselves such, as those of us steeped in the intellectual libertarian tradition are aghast at your stupidity. I take solace in the fact that these events will further marginalize an increasingly powerless and paranoid bunch. Keep digging boys! Have fun out there!

I hope the Tea Parties go well today. SOmething that's received very little publicity in the media is how one of Obama's very first public acts as president was to break his promise of no new taxes on those earning less than $250k per year. He singled out the poorest of the poor well-defined minority groups in America, those who cannot afford to even buy a pack of cigarettes but are reduced to rolling their own from shreds of loose tobacco and scraps of paper, and hit them with a tax incease of OVER 2,000%. No, that is not a misprint: from about $1/pound increased to about $24/pound. . - . - . That is the sort of action that inspired the original Boston Tea Party and that is the sort of action that's enraging so many today. . - . - . Mihcael J. Cheyenne had an unexpectedly large turnout at their noon demonstration today, perhaps 200+ people == lots of attention to the speakers. I'm impressed with Jackon's event. To me the basic issue is moral responsibility and faith in what we know as God, something that was mentioned here. Fundamentals is where we find broad agreement.

Won't change anything or any opinion in this town. But nothing wrong with speaking out.

Noon event had 125 peole at peak... evening about 25 people... an attendee used a clicker to count passing motorists that either honked or gave a thumbs up... = 1,093!!!!

Great job JH crew. I want to be in on that Shep/Chris coffee date. Very interesting.

The "Y" at Cutty's was a great place with really good public coverage. Regardless of the weather we had a good number of supporters stand with signs. I would say a majority of the responses were positive with honking, waving and thumbs up. We did a good job at joining the rest of the country yesterday in standing against too much government being involved in our lives, and spending more than the tax revenue that is available leaving us and our children in debt for many years to come. Yes we need programs, but many are unnecessary or too elaborate and should not be paid via the federal/state governments with our tax money. Just because we need a new pair of shoes does not mean we have to buy them on Rodeo Drive, Payless will suffice.

Christopher - It is June and I still have not heard from you about coffee? Really, I look forward to meeting you! :) Yep, we should have spoken out decades ago ... yep, we are late to the game, yep, Bush was bad and I should have shouted it more loudly. Yep, there were some attendees that are just beginning their journey into the philosophy of liberty ... perhaps they are simplistic and naive and perhaps I am too. Your comment helps how? I get the impression that you are a true libertarian and are very knowledgeable. Perhaps you could offer to teach us & guide us? Perhaps you would help my wayward party (R) better understand the principles of liberty? (I gotta say though, your insulting comment was well-written and made many good points! :)
