Green Action Jackson

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

By Nancy Taylor

A forum set for 2-5 p.m. on Friday at the Wort Hotel will feature discussion about the many “green” actions taking place in Jackson Hole. Come hear from the nonprofits, businesses and government agencies that are trying to make the valley a more sustainable place to live and work.

Friday’s event is co-sponsored by the Town of Jackson, the Murie Center and the Charture Institute’s Sustaining Jackson Hole project, and was inspired by Jackson Mayor Mark Barron’s signing the Climate Protection Agreement and the formation of his new “green team,” which is working to coordinate the many efforts taking place in and around Jackson.
We live in the midst of a national treasure, a place that people dream about moving to. Many of us care about the environment, recycle, take the bus and eat organic when we can. However, because of our remote location and many of our lifestyle choices, Jackson Hole leaves a large carbon footprint. The amount of energy that it takes to heat our homes, the number of miles we drive to get where we need to go, the airplane travel we rely on to escape winter or visit family all add up to large carbon emissions.

For years, many different ind
ividuals and organizations have been talking about and working towards making Jackson Hole green. How far have we come and how far do we have to go? Come find out, learn what organizations are doing to help you make a difference, and see how together we can live more sustainably as a community.

These bogus meetings take the place of real action. The only way a group of people could consider themselves environmentalists is if they lived at the mission without a personal vehicle. For all those wanting to make a real difference; sell your vehicle, downsize your current living arrangement, purchase regionally grown organic/unprocessed food, put a windmill in your backyard, and cease to use electronic devices unnessesarily.
