Joan Anzelmo, a 30-year veteran of the National Park Service who has served as public affairs chief at Grand Teton National Park for 13 years, will take on the position of Superintendent at Colorado National Monument in May.

Colorado National Monument is situated in the Grand Valley region of Colorado near Grand Junction and Fruita and features spectacular plateaus and canyons.

“I am thrilled, honored, excited and a little terrified,” Anzelmo said. “I am used to living in a community that loves their national park,” she added, acknowledging that the communities surrounding the monument feel the same way.

She looks forward to getting to know the staff and asking them what they view as the top issues for the monument.

The National Elk Refuge issued a call for interpretive sleigh ride proposals last week. Interested parties will operate under contract for five years and will work cooperatively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Grand Teton Natural History Association.

Educational sleigh rides are conducted on the refuge from mid-December through April and allow the public to see and learn about the refuge. The contractor will be expected to uphold the environmental integrity of the elk refuge and interpret natural resources and wildlife for refuge visitors.

Applications are due no later than 4 p.m. on March 22. For more information, contact the refuge’s Outdoor Recreation Planner at 307-733-9212 ext 227.

In an effort to educate architects, designers, builders, students and the public about the connection between the environment and design, The 2010 Imperative will host a worldwide “Global Emergency Teach-in” webcast. Jackson Hole resident can catch it 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Jackson Hole High School auditorium.

The Teach-in will reach 500,000 students and professionals and will feature prominent NASA researcher and global warming expert Dr. James Hansen as well as Edward Mazaria, head of Architecture 2030.

“To successfully impact global warming and world resource depletion, it is imperative that ecological literacy become a central tenet of design education,” 2010’s Web site states. Learn more at www.2010imperative.org.
