Barrasso to move for Wyo. Range protection

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R–Wyoming) is expected any day now to unveil legislation that would protect the Wyoming Range from further gas development.

The move is a continuation of the work of the late Sen. Craig Thomas, whose death in June left open the seat now held by Barrasso.

“We’ve been working on it for quite awhile,” said Cameron Hardy, a spokesman for the Senator. Hardy confirmed that the legislation is just shy of its debut, which should happen within the next ten days.

The legislation, which awaits a map that details proposed protected areas, would first go for an initial review before the Senate Energy Committee.

Hardy said the legislation would serve to protect the Wyoming Range twofold: by barring future leases, and by permanently disallowing drilling both on retired leases and those bought back by the government.

Upon traveling around and talking with constituents about the Wyoming Range after he took office, Sen. Barrasso decided to move for legislation to preserve the range, Hardy said.

“Senator Thomas, this was an issue he first took up,” the spokesperson said. “He felt certain areas of Wyoming should be off-limits.”
