Get personal
Jackson Hole, Wyo.-“Personal training” may seem to be reserved for the elite athlete. But when you think about it, personalized exercise is just what everybody needs. Often, many avoid exercise because they do not know where to begin after abandoning high school physical education, having become intimidated by their own bodies and not knowing how to functionally move.

Our bodies are beautifully designed to move at an optimal level with ease and comfort, but many of us forget the inherent capacity of our bodies. Sitting at a desk and facing a computer screen for hours detracts us from our physicality. Other non-physical activities like watching TV also inhibit our everyday movement.

Recently, Stacy Fisher, a personal trainer from One to One Wellness here in Jackson, showed me the value of moving freely and powerfully, teaching me to function easily with my body through personal training, something all of us can embrace.

She met me at One to One’s new satellite facility, which opened last week on the Westbank, where she explained that personal training reaches each at a personal level.
With her blonde ponytail pulled back neatly, Fisher’s sparkling blue eyes greeted me with equanimity. Her athletic confidence and friendly demeanor put me at ease; thankfully, since I envisioned a boot camp training work out where I would be driven to burn, bleed and pass out in exhaustion.

There was no intimidation. The whole experience was approachable and doable. Fisher introduced the session with sharp, intelligent and playful moves like the bear walk and inchworm which relaxed me and offered her a keen eye into where I needed guidance and focus.

Therapeutically, she had me mimicking making snow angels in pilates-like floor stretches as well as doing balancing moves incorporating yoga. She recommended exercises I could easily do at home, and she suggested investigating an ergonomic desk set up for my work and for others who spend a lot of time at their desks.
We focused on core strengthening, and when I finished the session, I felt lighter, looser and stronger. All this was accomplished by the science and creativity that personal training offers, and I could see that Fisher loves to assist people in achieving their personal goals. She’s worked with people ranging from as young as 10 on up to 84, guiding them to optimal, functional abilities.

Fisher focuses primarily on achieving optimal spinal flexibility and core strength as the basis for a smart training program. Her personal training style is a mix of various exercise methods including cardiovascular circuits, AIS and yoga stretches, as well as pilates. She believes that anyone is capable of a healthy lifestyle with a little guidance, goal-setting and motivation.

Like her, trainers at One to One Wellness exemplify this philosophy. Though each trainer has a personal style, they all share the philosophy of a holistic approach and train around strengthening your core and functional movement, which are the middle muscles – every movement is from the belly and builds strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness.

Anyone can rotate through the different trainers at One to One Wellness to keep the routine ever changing and continually challenging. Price for an individual session of personal training is $75 and there’s a discount if you purchase 10 or more sessions; partner prices are $40 per person per session ($80 total). Call One to One Wellness at 734-2808 to schedule a session or log on to www.121wellness.com to learn more.
The new One To One facility on the Westbank is a workable space for single or two person personal training sessions and small classes. It’s bright, clean and equipped with a stretching table, weights, yoga mats, cushiony floor, restroom/changing room and live plants.

Can this be? Is that ICE from the first installment of American Gladiators? My experience at One To One is mirrored in the article. It is unlike any training you will receive. Unlike the other alternatives in Jackson, you will not be shuffled from machine to machine. The trainers there use the body to create resistance with aides such as exercise balls etc. Highly recommended!!
