Living Well: The remaining ‘power of 10’

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

By Teresa Griswold

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-I began this year with the intention of living vibrantly in every moment and came up with 10 methods to magnify vitality and expand my experience of life like never before, all in honor of this year – 2010.

Last week, I shared five of those 10 methods and here are the rest. These are straightforward ways to magnify your vitality and raise your wellness factor by the power of 10.

6. Live true to your purpose.

I once measured my purpose by society’s success model – the accomplishment of wealth, position and honors. But the more I strived for these things, the less I felt like I was living, the more I felt like I was just going through the motions. It wasn’t until I embraced a new perspective that I was able to experience the joy of being true to my heart’s calling. Living true to our purpose breathes life into our goals and fuels our passion. Success then, is not something we earn or a place we arrive at, but instead is a feeling of exhilaration.

7. Find the sacred in the ordinary.

This is a way of looking at life and seeing the many miracles that spontaneously occur every day. Whether it be waking to a new
day full with possibilities, the smile from a precious baby, or an enchanted exchange with a stranger, each new moment is filled with mystery, and the miraculous unfolds with ease, as long as we are open to seeing it.

8. Surrender to God’s will.

One of my favorite daily prayers is comprised of four short words, “Thy will be done.” Having faith and allowing God’s infinite grace, mercy, and wisdom to flow through me as an extension of Love with a capital “L” allows for unimagined blessings. It’s the doorway to serenity.

9. Allow all your feelings to be present.

When I truly experience my emotions, rather than denying or suppressing them, I feel a sense of aliveness that’s palpable and authentic. In the movie 500 days of Summer, there is this raw honesty of emotion depicted in a light-hearted manner. It’s the truth of the emotions and the uncovering of them that shows in a hopeful way, “the best way out is always through.”

10. Open up to inspiration.

I have interviewed numerous emissaries of good will and luminaries of wellness for this column and other stories – people from our community who are global agents of change. Every time I hear about what someone is doing like ultra-marathoner Lisa Smith Batchen who is headed out to run 2,500 miles in 62 days to raise funds for AIDS orphans starting in April (www.runhope.com), I am inspired by their example. Smith Batchen’s motto is a quote from Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Inspiration is the precursor to liveliness and the antidote for inertia. JHW
