Jackson Hole, Wyoming - In the seven years I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen so many options for New Year’s Eve carousers. From funk-bluegrass, hip-hop, country and rock music to pole dancers and light shows, you can pick the backdrop for your first 2008 experience. Here’s a comprehensive list of the Hole scene:
In the town of Jackson, the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar on the Town Square is hosting newly formed band Route 66 for a night of country-rock. Tickets are $20 and which includes party favors and the classic champagne toast at midnight.
Town Square Tavern is hosting local New Orleans style Dixieland band Jackson 6 at 10:30 p.m. If you like lots of brass with your southern-fried grooves, this band will deliver. $25 will get you in the door of this recently opened watering hole on the Town Square. Doors open at 7 p.m., tickets available in advance.
On Broadway, the historic Silver Dollar Bar in the Wort Hotel is serving up one of the valley’s only free parties. The music attraction is Boondocks - an energetic band playing country-blues, rock, and Americana from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Across the street at 50 West Broadway, The (Pie) Club in the Pink Garter Plaza will feature San Francisco-based DJ O. He’ll be instigating a night of “sexy, sophisticated and soulful, to full-on 4 on-the-floor funky house and breaks.” Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for general admission, or for $500 (yeah, $500) you can reserve a V.I.P. table. Pick up tickets at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Company.
43 North, at the south end of Cache St., will feature jam band Dark Cheddar rockin’ bluesy originals, funk and reggae starting at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door, which includes a champagne toast.
The Snake River Brew Pub, 265 S. Millward, is transforming the place into their Club Pub ritual, with Four 4 Productions spinning a variety of dance music starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20.
The only room that welcomes smokers, the Virginian Saloon, is throwing a free party starting at 9 p.m. Solo act Bob Stevens will put together a set of Steely Dan and George Straight and even some old-school hip-hop.
Snow King Resort will present an evening of house and techno jams from Kid Epic and DJ Therapy at 10 p.m. in the Grand Teton Ballroom. Tickets are $20 at the door, or you can splurge for V.I.P. accommodations in The Lounge for $50.
If you’re looking for a laidback evening of great jazz, pianist Pam Phillips and bassist Bill Plummer will play 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. in The Granary at Spring Creek Ranch atop East Gros Ventre Butte.
Moving northwest of town to Teton Village Road, Front St. Productions has put together a bash full of DJs, sound systems and visual effects at Q Roadhouse BBQ. Barisone of Bend, Ore., is the featured DJ along with Cutter, Mike Thunder, Behnibubu, The Howler and Rig Veda. Tickets are $30 and on sale at Village Café, Q and ill23 Boardshop.
The place to be in Teton Village is the Mangy Moose Saloon, where local rock band Mandatory Air will raise a ruckus starting at 10 p.m. The eight-piece hollers classic party anthems people can sing along to. Tickets are $30 and available at the door or mangymoose.net.
In Wilson, the Stagecoach Bar is an authentic Western Saloon hosting instrumental funky bluegrass purveyors, the Jet Black Ninja Funk Grass Unit. The party starts hopping at 10 p.m.
Looking for something a little on the adventurous side? An hour south of Jackson in Alpine, Wyo., the Bull Moose Saloon is hosting a live band, cage fighting by Rocky Mountain Athletics and Bare Necessities Dancers.
My party pick for the most boisterous night of the year is On the One at the Knotty Pine in Victor. The staunchly talented jazz-funk band from San Diego is one of the best that comes through the Tetons. Tickets are $15 at the door. If you can’t make their New Year’s show, catch them Saturday at the Mangy Moose.
Chanman Roots Band will help ring in the New Year at 9 p.m. in the Trap Bar at Grand Targhee Resort. Look forward to roots-reggae with no cover charge. A complimentary resort shuttle will depart Driggs for Grand Targhee at 8 p.m. (pickup at 1st Street and Ski Hill Road) with return trips scheduled to leave the resort at 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.
All of these parties mentioned are 21 and over. Remember to utilize the valley’s taxis and keep it safe out there. Enjoy!
