The Players Ball: ain't no party like a hotel party

By Sam Petri

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-A swarm of shred-heads will descend upon the Snow King Resort hotel from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday for the third annual Jackson Hole Snowboarder Magazine (JHSM) release party, dubbed ‘The Players Ball.’ The event will most likely sell out, so buy your tickets in advance for $20 at the Village Café, Backcountry Provisions or JoJo’s. Dress to impress and get ready for a party that JHSM publisher Jesse Brown said will be “seriously bumping.”

Young local writers, photographers, artists, athletes, musicians and entrepreneurs will round out the scene. The party will take place throughout the Snow King Hotel. Rooms will be $100 for those who attend the ball and want to stay overnight.

Starting in the lobby, Anomaly Farm, a Wilson-based design and production collective, will be screen-printing t-shirts with original designs as well as selling unique handmade hats. Anomaly Farm is a collective comprised of Mark and Wade Dunstan, Owen Ashley, Anders Berling and Alex Yoder who have come together through their passion for snowboarding. Local pro snowboarder Rob Kingwill will also be on hand to sell his signature Avalon 7 hats and bandanas. Photography by Heather Erson and art by Anika Youcha and Ryan Haworth will be displayed.

Upstairs there will be “mad different things going on,” according to Brown. For example, Jackson’s stand-up comedy crew, Wynott, will perform in the Rafferty Room. Pro snowboarders Travis Rice and Kyle Clancy will premier the teaser for their upcoming film “That’s it That’s All” and Willie McMillon will premier the teaser for the new Bluebird Wax film “™ / $” otherwise known as “Love Over Money.”

Several bars and lounges will be established upstairs with most of the space redecorated for the party. El Gant, a Hip Hop group from New York, N.Y., DJ Wicked, a turntablist from Portland, Ore. and J-Boogie, a down-tempo Hip Hop soul DJ from San Francisco, are the musical headliners of the evening. Local DJ’s Mike Thunder and Cut La Whut will also spin records. Boulder-based break dance crew Affiliate Dance will be on hand to dance better than you can.

Winter apparel, snowboards, season passes, avalanche education classes and art will be raffled off with all proceeds going to the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.
Three years ago, their inaugural release party called “The electric Kool-Aid Christmas Party” was held at 43 North and was “all out debauchery,” Brown said.

The following year JHSM held a masquerade-themed winter solstice party, again at 43 North, to celebrate their second issue. Each year the magazine has grown and more people have gotten involved. Now it is distributed in nearby states like Colorado, Utah, California and Oregon and is sent as far away as New York. When asked why the magazine has been a success Brown said, “We’re not trying to create anything. We didn’t create anything. We’re just documenting what’s going on.”
