Jackson Hole, Wyo.-An event-packed weekend is ahead, one that will require the sacrifice of attending one very worthwhile event - the “Sophie’s Choice” of the sophisticated gadabout – in favor of another.
On Friday, famed Flamenco guitarist Paco Peña will perform at the Center for the Arts, bringing to Jackson Hole the impassioned sounds of longing and remembrance from the rolling, sun-dappled plains of Andalucia. Joining him onstage are two other guitarists, three flamenco dancers, singers and a percussionist.
The show, which received rave reviews in both the New York Times and London’s The Guardian, should transplant the audience to an old Moorish quarter in Seville, where orange trees spring from tiled plazas, and men in white shirts call “Maria,” telling her story, and then evoking her name as she moves, Tickets are $35 for balcony and $45 for orchestra seating or $20 for students. Call 733-4900.
Friday also marks the annual return of the two-night Banff Film Festival, featuring a selection of short and feature length mountain sport and lifestyle films from the Canadian festival. This is the inaugural year for the event to be held at Walk Festival Hall. Phil Leeds of Skinny Skis, which co-sponsors the local screenings, said this year’s films should move, stir and delight, like “20 Seconds of Joy,” which follows Norwegian skier Karina Hollekim as she ventures into and completely out of BASE jumping amid family crisis.
“The Eternal Knot,” screening Saturday night, is about love forged from tragic death of mountaineer Alex Lowe. Comforting one another after the slide killed him, Lowe’s widow Jennifer and his climbing partner Conrad Anker, who was with the mountaineer when an avalanche killed him, found more than solace and the pair contend with life and loss in a new mixed family. Patagucci and Outdoor Research schwag will be raffled off. Tickets, which sell out every year, are $15 for one night or $25 for both. Call 733-6094 for more.
On Tuesday, Galactic drummer extraordinaire Stanton Moore, along with band bassist Rob Mercurio will hold a Stanton Moore Rhythm Section Clinic at the Center for the Arts. Moore, a New Orleans native, grew up apprenticing in the dark musical reaux of that city, playing from a young age at some of the old-line clubs and bars there. If you have any interest in drumming or are keen on New Orleans/funk/jazz music in general, the clinic is a must. The JH Music Experience is hosting the event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Participation is $20, or $15 for JHME members. Call 690-5702.
