Willie, Neville Brothers in Center season lineup

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-What do the Neville Brothers, Keb Mo’, Del McCoury, Leo Kottke and the inimitable Willie Nelson have in common? They, and many others, will take stage over the next year at Jackson Hole’s anchoring performing arts venue.

The Center for the Arts this week announced its 2008 lineup, including the aforementioned performers of soul, country-rock, R&B and blues, along with special features of theatre, dance and original shows that blur the lines of performance art.
There are many notable performances scheduled, including blues phenom Jonny Lang, mandolin virtuoso and songstress Rhonda Vincent, Broadway veteran Bill Nolte and San Francisco’s Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet.

New Orleans’ first family of funk and soul, the Neville Brothers, will kick off the summer season on June 10. Nelson, who continues to be so on top of things that he just released an album featuring a track with Snoop Dogg, will headline the August 23 annual fundraiser. Tickets for that night, which include copious food and drink, are $550 per head. While that might seem a hefty price to see the iconic American troubadour, remember that the rarified evening offsets the price of other performances and helps fund programs throughout the year.

Tickets for all shows go on sale May 1. A full schedule and updated calendar will soon be posted to www.JHCenterForTheArts.com. Call the box office at 733-4900 with other questions.

This week, author Joanne Harris, whose 1999 novel Chocolat helped win her commercial success as well as raving reviews, will talk about her new book at 7 p.m. Friday at the Center for the Arts. Harris will read from The Girl with No Shadow, the follow up to Chocolat.

Harris had an unusual English upbringing that has heavily informed her work. Her early years were spent in her grandparents’ candy store and her great-grandmother was a known witch and mystic. Her subsequent travels to provincial France (her mother was French) inspired Chocolat.

The Teton County Library Foundation is sponsoring the event and will give free chocolate to all who attend. The evening is free and open to all.

The Jackson Hole High School drama department premieres its spring musical this week with the 1950s classic Broadway musical “Guys and Dolls.” The high school cast will perform a run of six shows, running Thursday through Saturday this week and next. Call 732-3720 for more.
