Foundations of funk: guitar, bass and drums

Jackson Hole, Wyo.- Jackson sees a lot of exported bluegrass from the Sunshine State, but Holden Young Trio leaves the blue kind of grass at home. Wah sounds, funky rhythms and an experimental edge are the foundation of this guitar-bass-drum lineup.

While Fela Kuti tops the list of Young’s songwriting influences, you’re more likely to hear the grooves of James Brown, John McLaughlin and extended improvisations of the contemporary jam scene, reminding me of The Disco Biscuits with less synth electronica. These three players have grown tight from consistent touring through the West and Northwest.

Guitarist-songwriter-vocalist Holden Young met bassist-vocalist Billy Franklin and drummer Eric Rolls while living the ski bum life in Steamboat Springs. Young relocated to Boulder, while Franklin moved to New Orleans, and New York native Eric Rolls remained in Steamboat as a snowboard instructor and competitor. Now, they still live in separate places but reconvene for touring.

“Being in a trio has actually taught me how to simplify my playing over the years,” Young said, who often invites other musicians onstage when playing around Boulder. “Harmonically, it frees me up to go a lot of places, and it also allows the bassist and drummer to stretch their roles and shine.”

After growing up in Maine, Young graduated from Berklee College of Music. Like many music school graduates trying to find their place, he moved to Nashville and recorded his first album, Not Much and Everything. It was there that Young wrote three songs a day for a year.

“Nashville was a great experience … better than I thought it would be,” Young admitted.

But when Young became disenchanted with Music City, he decided to help out with hurricane Katrina relief. Though he put in his time working long hours, he only received $300 from the government. Disgruntled and ready to give up a lot of things, he moved to Colorado with no money. Now, it’s all about devoting time to songwriting, playing non-stop, and earning slots on the festival circuit.

“I’m really enjoying where we are right now with the band,” Young said. “We’re doing it the American way, independently, and building relationships with people one on one.”

On the road in Young’s trusty 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, the trio is currently touring in support of their 2007 indie release, Steps to the Top, a predominantly funk-rock affair topped with Young’s laidback, whispery vocals. JHW
