Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Music all day and all night is what’s in store for the God Bless America Festival on Independence Day at the Knotty Pine in Victor. Slow roasted pig and six bands on two stages will keep you chomping at the bit for the entire holiday—all for free. Gritty slide guitar player Papa Mali will bring the psychedelic swamp funk of the Mississippi delta, along with Colorado bluegrass quartet Head for the Hills, Montana’s honkytonkers 10 Foot Tall and 80 Proof, and local acts Chanman Roots Band, Lunkur and The Miller Sisters. For more information, call 208-787-2866.
•The songwriting of Mark Stuart and his trio, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, is far more original than the band’s name. Twang, sophistication and rowdiness ala Steve Earle or Robert Earl Keen is a more adequate comparison than Johnny Cash, and the band
’s contribution to roots-based, road-weary country music is the real deal. They’ve been doing it the hard way for more than a decade—piling their own gear into their own van and crossing the country time and time again. The Austin-based performs at 10 p.m. on Independence Day at the Bull Moose Saloon in Alpine. For ticket info call 654-7593.
•If you’re looking for an alternative to Fire in the Hole at the base of Snow King, Teton Village will also host fireworks this 4th of July, complimented by live bluegrass with Head for the Hills. The quartet has let the music of John Hartford, David Grisman and Bill Monroe seep into their soul, while also tapping into the innovation of the post-traditional jamgrass world. They will be supported by local grass quartet Random Canyon Growlers, who have made large strides on the local scene since forming just months ago. The two bands will play at 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Mangy Moose in Teton Village. $8 will get you in the door each night. JHW
