Jackson Hole, Wyoming -
Get hip to the WestHistorically, the Wild West and the life of the cowboy have embodied an attitude of progression, an important relationship with nature and a lawlessness that still has great allure today.
The Jackson Hole Cowboy Jubilee is a nonprofit venture that rouses Western pride by highlighting the ranching lifestyle and celebrating our – somehow inconspicuous - spot on the map.
On Saturday, the jubilee commences with a ranch tour. Folks will convene at Cache and Gill Streets and then mosey to the Box L Ranch in Spring Gulch and the Snake River Ranch where ranchers will talk trials, tribulations and the rural romanticism of the ranching lifestyle. BBQ grubbin’ ala Bubba’s and live music will also be in attendance.
Then on Sunday, Pickin in the Park brings the essentials of a thriving society together in one place – music, food and art.
Culinary treats from all over the valley will compete for your chomps with Taste of the Tetons, while live Western music and the Art Association’s Takin it to the Streets art fair provides a forum for artists to slang their work. The jubilee closes with a concert at the Center for the Arts on Monday featuring Jon Chandler and The Wichitones – an outfit that melds meaningful Western lyricism with sounds of bluegrass, Americana, country, folk and more. The roster also includes music and performance art by Sourdough Slim and poetry by ‘Minnesota Cowgirl’ Diane Tribitt.
The Ranch Tour begins at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Cache and Gill Streets. Pickin in the Park is at 11 a.m., Sunday, in Town Square. The Music and Poetry Roundup starts at 7 p.m., Monday at the Center Theater, inside the Center for the Arts, 240 S. Glenwood. Jacksonholecowboyjubilee.org or jhcenterforthearts.org
Hilarious miseryDon’t feel like a deadbeat - laughing at another’s misfortune is a perfectly acceptable method to alleviate your own stress. Off Square Theatre’s Black Box series as a part of the Fall Arts Festival, lowers audience-blood pressure with a dark comedy of misfortune and malaise - The Sweetest Swing in Baseball, and Lettice and Lovage, an English play about two women battling the boredom of everyday life.
In The Sweetest Swing, artist Dana Fielding can’t seem to get her work churning, her love life burning, or her identity correct - at least that’s what she wants her psychiatrist to think anyway. Seeking some mental help for her unpopular artwork and a relationship gone awry, Dana finds that her insurance runs out only shortly after her sessions begin. So she convinces her shrink that she believes she is Darryl Strawberry, and clearly, is still in desperate need of therapy.
In Lettice and Lovage, Lettice Douffet is a tour guide of a historical home in England. Disheartened by looks of boredom each time Douffet recites another piece of useless info, she decides to create her own outlandish story for the tour. It isn’t long, however, before her fanciful tales fall upon the wrong ears. But a surprising female bond is forged when the same woman who at first chastised Douffet, becomes her accomplice in a plan to wreck havoc all over London.
The Sweetest Swing shows at 8 p.m., tonight through Saturday, at the Black Box Theater inside the Center for the Arts, 240 S. Glenwood. Lettice and Lovage runs 8 p.m., September 15 through 19 at the Black Box Theater. Both shows are $25 adults, $20 seniors/students. 733.4900.
Smart form, beautiful functionClothing, furniture and kitchen wares offer function for every day existence, but our eyes are often drawn to items that also hold unique artistic appeal. It’s all about art that serves a purpose beyond its aesthetics at the Western Design Conference. This event has aimed to propel Western art and design by bringing to one place, artists and designers from far-reaching locales who experiment in a bevy of mediums. Many pieces are birthed from Western tastes but also capture styles like Rustic, Lodge, Adirondack, Asian, Southwestern, Hispanic and Native American. There are three notable events in the Western Design Conference – the exhibition and sale, the fashion show and the accredited lecture series which will touch upon sustainable design, eco-friendly architecture and other topics that address creating in ever-changing environs.
The Western Design Exhibition and Sale is free only from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, then pay $15 from noon to 5 p.m. It also runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, $15. Fashion show doors open at 6 p.m., Thursday. Tickets are $75 to $125. The lecture series begins at 11 a.m., Saturday. All events are at Snow King. westerndesignconference.com
Gallery hoppin’While the Western Design Conference showcases all that is Western, another special event during the Fall Arts Festival displays that there is indeed much beyond Western art and influences to appreciate and discuss here in Jackson Hole.
The Palates and Palettes Gallery Walk includes more than 30 participating galleries that open their doors to observers, art critics, conversationalists and wandering souls. New exhibits – plus live music, food and drink - will priemere especially in light of P&P, inlcuding “These are the People in your Neighborhood,” a community-focused show curated by Christian Burch at Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary that exposes the hidden talents of locals, via wooden cutout silhouettes. Just a few blocks away, Teton Artlab will feature new works from local artist Craig Spankie – check pages 18 and 19 for more.
