Jalan Crossland
There are few musicians that can ride the edge and pull it off as if the tensions were planned note for note. Jalan Crossland is one of them. He also writes a damn entertaining newsletter, or “nooseletter,” as he calls it, using the same wyo-neck intellect that will draw a cackle, while simultaneously driving home a one-of-a-kind social or political observance. You’ll hear and see the same in his music and stage banter.
The once National Fingerstyle Champion and Wyoming Flatpick Champion takes stage with his band at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, at Dornan’s in Moose. Tickets are $15 and available at Dornan’s and Valley Bookstore. Check Dornans.com for a full winter schedule. 733-2415.
Dub Tonic KruIt’s a big week at the Knotty Pine. The Dub Tonic Kru will back highly respected Black Uhuru lead singer, Michael Rose, in support of his latest release, Warrior. The album depicts the hard-edged reality themes of life and survival in the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica. If you don’t know Black Uhuru, they earned the first Grammy offered for Best Reggae Album back in 1985. Rose has a distinct vocal style, like his signature “tu tu tweng” and other skats.
Michael Rose with The Dub Tonic Kru performs at 10 p.m., Tuesday at the Knotty Pine in Victor. Tickets are $20/advance, $22/day-of-show. 208-787-2866.
Michael HurwitzWhen Alta resident Michael Hurwitz delivers a song—straightforward and colored with his gravely baritone—you’re in for a storytelling experience. From classic country-blues stylings ala Delta and Piedmont, to Hawaiian slack key, Travis picking, and even some Cajun spice, Hurwitz is a prized local talent. You’ll have four chances to see him this week with his band, The Aimless Drifters, consisting of Tommy Broderick on pedal steel and Jerry Linn on bass.
The trio plays at 3:30 p.m., Thursday in the Trap Bar at Grand Targhee (free); 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, at the Silver Dollar Bar (free); and at 8 p.m., Tuesday at Dornan’s ($15). -AD
