Jackson Hole, Wyo.-From tragedy comes art. Ellen Hopkins wrote her first book, Crank, loosely based on her oldest daughter’s struggle with a crystal meth addiction. Told from the perspective of a drug addict, the book chronicles a “good girl’s” fall from grace. Because of its timely subject matter and emotional content, the book quickly became a young adult favorite, making its way onto the The New York Times’ bestseller list.
Following the success of her first book, Hopkins continued to crank out young adult novels about tough topics. Trick tackles prostitution, Impulse delves into suicide, and Burned deals with domestic abuse. “A major goal is reaching out to young adults through my novels,” Hopkins said, “letting them know they’re not alone in their problems and discussing ways to make better decisions than my protagonists often do.”
Ellen Hopkins will speak on Wednesday, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Hard Drive Cafe. Free. 733-2164.
