Jackson Hole, Wyo.-As you skip from barbeque to barbeque on Sunday, make sure you check out all that the valley has to offer. Our country is turning 234, and to celebrate the biggest birthday party of the year, Jackson Hole invites you to join in on its traditional Fourth of July festivities.
The Jackson Hole Jaycees are once again serving their famous sausage, pancakes and eggs breakfast right on the Town Square. The perfect start to the day runs from 8 to 10 a.m. All proceeds go toward the community fireworks and scholarships for local students. The bargain cost for this hearty meal is $10 for adults, $5 for children.
Stick around town after you’re full, because the Howdy Pardners’ Fourth of July parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Beginning at the rodeo grounds, it will wind its way into the downtown area soon after. For those who still would like to participate in the parade, contact Maureen Murphy at 733-3316, ext. 102.
Immediately following the parade, parents and children are invited to the field at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Cache Street for outdoor fun and games. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the event includes a three-legged race, watermelon eating contest, infant crawl and more. There is a $10 suggested donation per child ($5 for adults who want lunch).
After lunch, grab your Frisbees, picnic blankets and wine glasses and enjoy some classical music under a hopefully sunny sky. Music in the Hole, an event favored by locals and tourists alike, begins at 3 p.m. with local performers on Alpine Field by the JH Middle School. Local nonprofits will provide booths with food and drink for purchase, and other fun activities will also take place. Then starting at 6p.m. the Grand Teton Music Festival orchestra’s patriotic concert begins, complete with cannon firing. No tickets required. To find out more visit,
www.gtmf.org.
Then, at 8p.m., head over to the rodeo grounds to catch the high-octane Independence Day rodeo. Despite Jackson being a small town, this special rodeo features professional barrel-racing angels and gruff bull riders, all of whom put their life on the line for your entertainment. Advance tickets available; call 690-4036.
If you happen to be in Teton Village for Independence Day, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will host local band Jackson 6 in the Village Commons, performing in the new outdoor amphitheater. The free concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and the Bridger Gondola will be running until 9 p.m. As part of its “Red, White and 2 celebration,” JHMR will also host Isaac Hayden at 7:30 p.m., Saturday (yes, that’s July 3). Fireworks go off both nights at 10 p.m.
Fireworks will also erupt once it gets dark enough (around 10 p.m.) in Jackson on the Fourth. Come to the base of Snow King for merriment and lots of cool grass to lie in, or hike up any surrounding peak to witness the spectacle from above. If Snow King’s large crowds worry you, the field at the Center for the Arts is also prime for viewing. Walking or biking is encouraged, as traffic jams throughout town are inevitable. JHW
All listed events take place on Sunday, unless noted otherwise.
