Jackson Hole, Wyo.-David Banegas's Native American portraits bring the vibrancy of South America indigenous works to Cezanne's questions of perspective with thick brush strokes of bright colors. While Cezanne's works seem to be full of movement, however, Banegas's stoic faces are still, with colors and rogue brushstrokes displaying movement and intensity. In paintings of historical figures such as Sitting Bull, Banegas seems to find resolve; in Chief Joseph, suspicion.
The energy of his native Brazil lives in the texture and color, which he uses as lens through which to interpret the essence of his subject. While the works have a flat decorative quality to them that make them suitable for contemporary homes that have one red or one gold wall, for instance, they're difficult to look away from.
David Banegas's opening reception is, 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday at Diehl Gallery, 155 W. Broadway.
