Comment period for winter use plans in parks opens

Thursday, March 29, 2007

By PJH Staff

Jackson Hole, Wyo--The National Park Service has released its Winter Use Plans Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway.

The Park Service is accepting public comment on the DEIS until May 31, 2007. The document can be found at parkplanning.nps.gov, as can the electronic comment form.

The DEIS outlines the Park Service’s proposal for snowmobile and snowcoach use in the parks. Major issues evaluated in the DEIS include social and economic issues, health and human safety, wildlife, air quality, natural soundscapes, visitor access and circulation, and visitor experience.

Senator Enzi (R-WY) issued a call to action, urging residents in the vicinity of the parks to comment on the Park Service’s proposal.

“Residents in the Yellowstone Park area have shared many thoughts with me about how they feel the park should be utilized in the winter. Now is the time to share those thoughts with the Park Service,” Enzi said in press release.

Comments can be submitted electronically at the above Web site or by mail at Winter Use Planning Team, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82910. Comments will not be accepted by phone, fax or email.
