Town Square antler arch up for auction

Thursday, May 03, 2007

By PJH Staff

JACKSON HOLE, WYO-Looking to spruce up the entryway to your home? If you’re still searching for that personal touch to make your log cabin stand out from all the others, consider bidding on one of the Town Square’s elk antler arches as part of the Boy Scouts’ annual Elk Antler Auction on May 19.

The four arches are at least 50-years-old and for the first time, one of the arches, the one that marks the southwest entrance to the Square, will be up for public auction.

The Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Town of Jackson, is spearheading the effort to replace the aging arches.

Funds from the auction will help with the arch replacement effort. Each arch is estimated to contain approximately 2,000 antlers weighing 7,000 to 10,000 pounds and is being sold “as is” with no guarantee as to the final weight or condition.

In the past, full newer antlers have averaged about $10 per pound. The arch will be sold as one piece; individual antlers will not be sold from it. The final price of the arch includes delivery of the disassembled arch anywhere in Jackson Hole.

Shipping outside of the valley is th
e responsibility of the buyer. If you want to help raise money for the effort but aren’t looking to acquire a massive antler arch, you can enter a contest to guess how many elk antlers are in the arch.

Each guess costs $5, with half of the proceeds going to the lucky winner and half back to the Rotary Club for purchasing more antlers for the project.

The Rotary Club will guarantee $1,000 to the winner who will be announced in front of the newly constructed arch at a dedication after the 4th of July Parade.

On May 29, the Public Works Department will begin disassembling and replacing the arch, which could take up to three weeks. If needed, they will replace any metal framing and other structural materials that help support the arch.

For further information or to purchase a ticket to guess the quantity of antlers in the arch, contact Pete Karns at 307-732-7474 or T.R. Pierce at 307-732-3050.

Thank goodness you can show your city/money/artsy friends that SOME progress is being made to rid the town of those reminders of "slaughtered bambis"! Wouldn't want it known the place started out as a hunting camp, would you?, I say sarcastically.
Joseph F. Ward

Would be a cool buy...I know they will start a new arch after this one is torn down. Joseph, you sound like a anti-hunter(get real)those are shedded horns, not kills! PS: Do your homework before you post(ha ha)...
fossilman

Joseph F. Ward, You must be a complete moron. Those antlers in the arch were gathered from the elk refuge by the Boy Scouts after the elk shed them in the spring. Your "Slaughtered Bambis" comment shows how stupid and narrow minded you really are.

I partied hard under thoses arches in 1971, I was 19. I spent every summer in Jackson,, thoses arches will take with them many memories. Those antlers provided character to that little park and the village of Jackson. Many blessings to all the grand Elk locals!!
Frederick Frost

Glad someone clarified the origin of those antlers

Hello Ms.Realistic...there "sheds" dropped by the Elk,and Deer...no one animal was shot to include "bambis"..get a life you lib....Ted Nugget

I am against hunting, but this is a landmark. I don't they should auction it off.
Pamela Rainsong

Oh good... well even better if the antlers are not from hunts. I grew up hunting, but I don't hunt anymore. It's a personal choice. My family still hunts. Anyway... The landmark should stay.
Pamela Rainsong

By the way... No need to be nasty to other people. Everyone has the right to their own thoughts. Not everyone knows the history of the arch... I didn't for one. And I'm quite certain that the people on here are not rocket scientists. Have some tolerance. The reason why people on the internet are so likely to go off... calling other people names and such is because on the internet they cannot get slapped.

I visited Jackson in Feb. 1966 while on active duty in the Navy at the NRTS Idaho Falls, and I remember one "antler hut", not the four "antler arches" that are being replaced. Does anyone else remember the antler hut during the 1960s?

glad I had seen it a few times now that I live in Panama, nothing here except the Brahma bulls come anywhere close to the size and majesty of a bull elk, blessed is the West
