Local meteorologist poses question: Gore or Gray?

JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING - In climate news last week, Al Gore won a share of a Nobel Prize for his crusade against global warming. On the same day, Dr. William Gray, one of the world’s foremost meteorologists, called the award “ridiculous” and said the prize was, “the product of people who don’t understand how the atmosphere works.”
Dr. Gray, best known for his work in hurricane forecasting, acknowledges that global warming has taken place, but that a natural cycle of ocean temperatures are responsible for the current global warm-up.
Dr. Gray also noted that those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes were in error. “There were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, when it was cooler, and 83 hurricanes from 1957 to 2006, when it was warming.”
“The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures,” Dr. Gray said. Nevertheless, I believe we should still continue to reduce the amount of pollutants we put in the air, whether we are warming-up or cooling down. That’s what this issue is really all about.
