New JHFF partnership is a recipe for censorship

Jackson Hole, Wyoming - Recently the astonishing news that the Jackson Hole Film Festival had entered into a “partnership” with the United Nations was reported. According to the festival website, the partnership’s goal is “to work with the entertainment industry on utilizing film and television to raise public awareness of today’s pressing challenges and of the U.N.’s role in addressing them.”

Unlike many, I’m critical of this partnership. I resent a powerful political entity like the U.N. co-opting the arts and artists to further its agenda. You may argue that the U.N. does many good things. They feed the hungry, care for the ill and help children. Fine. I can argue that the U.S. government also gives food aid, medical aid and helps care for children. But we don’t want our government “utilizing” the entertainment industry to burnish its image and further its agendas. Why would we want the U.N. to do so?

The U.N. is not a knight in shining armor. That’s the image fostered by the liberal press, but its history is replete with corruption and scandal, including widespread sexual misconduct and pedophilia by U.N. peacekeepers in Sierra Leone, Congo, Kosovo, Liberia, Haiti and elsewhere. It’s a de facto world government with the corruption and drive for power inherent in any big government.

Still, it’s easy to see why the JHFF would want to partner with it. Given the U.N.’s image and fawning press coverage, the relationship should bring publicity and prestige to the Festival - but at what cost? The cost will be its independence and integrity of the festival, and filmmakers. The U.N.’s goal is to influence subject matter, provide “editorial input” for filmmakers, and connect the creative community with “relevant experts.” First, I think filmmakers and television programmers are perfectly capable of finding poignant stories to tell without help from the U.N. Second, their desire to provide editorial input is alarming. Do filmmakers need the U.N. to tell them they’re on the wrong track, or to delete this and include that? Third, you can be certain the “relevant experts” will be in complete agreement with the U.N. viewpoint and agenda.

All this will only bastardize filmmaking and lead to U.N. propaganda. I believe the JHFF is compromising itself by partnering with the U.N. Will they show a film that tells the tragic story of a young girl raped by a U.N. peacekeeper? Will they embrace a documentary lamenting the loss of personal liberty and national sovereignty? Will they consider a film that warns of the dangers of world government and the emerging global security state? Will they feature a film that debunks the IPCC and global warming hysteria? I doubt it. The UN’s infiltration and manipulation of the entertainment industry is frightening and dangerous. Writers, producers, and directors need to work in complete independence and freedom. If they agree with the U.N., fine, but art must transcend and remain independent from political power and its influence.

The JHFF would be well advised to rethink its relationship with the U.N. and let its reputation be built by searching out and screening great films, not by allying itself with a political power.

Good points. The UN is shady at best and certainly doesn't act in the U.S's best interest and that is why Hollywood is so attracted to it. If it's anti-American, then it must be Hollywood.
Daniel, Wy

1st- They announced that cooperation with the UN in February. It was "recent" and you should have been astonished then, not June. 2nd- You are under the perception that our federal and local governments don’t already use the media to forward their political policies? I would much prefer an organization that is supposedly dedicated international organization, aid, and diplomacy using our arts and entertainment than our current administration. World Bank, UN, IMF, you name it, have sticky leadership problems and major corruption issues. Many times they end up supporting really bad leaders because those leaders have made the situation impoverished for their people. But if they didn’t exist, we would be clamoring for their creation, because the third world is not a pretty place. 3rd- When you called the JHFF and asked how much input the UN had in film selection, and how many films the UN representative denied or allowed, did they give you an actual percentage, or just leave you with the impression that it was heavily influenced. 4th- While I am all for rotting my brain in front of the many films Hollywood spoon feeds us and we pay $10 a pop for (I think this week we have Zohan, Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones, Sex and the City), are you serious saying that getting the world program and global insight films, which may or may not be chosen along the guidelines of a message decided upon with the UN is a bad thing? I don’t know how much input, if ANY, UN reps put into that message, but the JHFF mandate provides a unique view of films that may not get much press in other places because they may not be commercial enough for other festivals. And these films may work well along with UN agenda, so it may be a good fit for both. 5th- Please sight your source for editorial input and story selection. You are talking major conspiracy. Most of the film makers are trying to first do what they love, second feed themselves, and third do something meaningful. If you want to pick a real fight, go after the major media outlets, and their coverage of those stories you cited. It’s like the meth commercials on TV, they work because the scare us, and we generally don’t have enough time to change the channel before the meth afflicted teenager shows up. Whenever the nightly news shows Darfur, we can always turn it back to “Three’s Company”, or, in Jackson, just go for a hike and ignore it. Finally, I would like to know if you interviewed anyone or put your assertions to anyone at the JHFF. The article reeks of libertarian thought stewing inside an individuals head without the check and balance of reality, small film festival economic reality, or outside opinion.

Will, thanks for the comment. I'll try to respond point by point. I said the relationship was recently "reported", and was not referring to an "announcement" in February. To my knowledge, the Planet and N&G had only recently written stories about the partnership. I'm under no illusion that we are not inundated with propaganda by our government. I said, "We DON'T WANT our government 'utilizing' the entertainment industry...' for propaganda purposes, and that, I believe is true. I don't want any big political powers co-opting the arts. I didn't say the UN would have an input in film selection. I said they'd influence the "subject matter" of filmmakers. As for influencing "story selection", again, I said "subject matter." I think the UN influencing subject matter is not a controversial statement, but follows from the entire idea of its involvement with filmmakers. As for "editorial input, I quote from Ben Cannon's story of June 11: "The office [the UN's 'newly annointed new office'] is designed to open a new interface between filmmakers and television programmers, allowing projects opportunities for editorial input by the U.N., and connecting the creative community with 'relevant experts' a U.N release stated." I did not interview anyone for the op-ed. It sprung solely from the libertarian thought stewing inside my mind.

Will, first, this IS an opinion piece. Last I checked opinion it is still covered under the First Amendment. Next, the UN created this film/entertainment division to do exactly that, to influence and use the entertainment industry to improve their perception here in the U.S. (like anyone cares.) The partnership isn't about promoting and creating films about poor kids in third world countries, it's all about painting the U.N. in a better light. This is propaganda at it's finest moment and it's unfortunate that the liberal entertainment industry is a willing partner. It is widely reported that the U.N. is mired in corruption (food for oil, abuses by peacekeepers, and intimidation by member states) so Bob was not out of line to mention these blemishes. I also feel Bob is correct in his assumption that it is not a the kind of relationship we want our film industry to be in. I'll take the Hulk over U.N. propaganda any day.

Let's not forget to mention our friendly folks at the UN's IAEA who are going to turn a cheek to Iran's nukes. Let's see some films about that!
