Del McCoury a delight

Jackson Hole, Wyoming - Grammy-winning bluegrass traditionalists The Del McCoury Band performed Sunday evening at the Center for the Arts to a well-attended theatre of local musicians and bluegrass connoisseurs.  The quintet were as tight and clean as they look, rambling through a long set of lightning fast instrumentals, crowd requests (“Asheville Turnaround”), and classics (“High on a Mountain Top”).

Perhaps the fastest and flashiest version of “Rawhide” in history highlighted the thirty-plus song set. Banjoist Rob McCoury set the wheels on fire for “Earl’s Breakdown,” a shout out to Rob & Del’s favorite 5-stringer, Earl Scruggs. Each picker had their time to shine and one of the world’s best mandolin players, Ronnie McCoury, let it rip on “Baltimore Johnny,” emphasizing his virtuosic and diverse approach to melody.

Vocally, one of the best tunes was definitely “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” a great storytelling tune written by Richard Thompson. Before launching into a solid version of Bill Monroe’s “Rocky Road Blues,” bassist Alan Bartram gave a shout to openers Anne and Pete Sibley stating, “That’s the best thing I’ve seen in a long time.”
