Jackson Hole, Wyo. - A local scientist, Peter Ward, will hold a press conference on Tuesday in Chicago, IL stating that "Sulfur dioxide emitted from volcanoes and from burning fossil fuel" is the primary cause of global warming, not carbon dioxide like most climate change scientists claim.
In a press release issued today, Ward concludes, "Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas compounding global warming, but it is not the initiator of climate change."
According to Ward, during the past 46,000 years, the rate of global warming was at its highest during the times when volcanoes were most active.
“When very large volcanic eruptions occur every few months," Ward wrote in his press release, “rapid warming follows. Too much sulfur dioxide in a short period of time causes warming.”
Ward says that in 1979 global concerns over acid rain and mitigation efforts by the international community to cut power plant sulfur emissions "accidentally reduced global warming."
According to Ward, sulfur dioxide emissions are on the rise as new power plants are put into operation each week globally.
"But we know how to reduce sulfur emissions both technically and politically." he said. "[minimizing sulfur dioxide emissions] is much easier than reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Ward's paper will be published in the next issue of the physics journal "Thin Solid Films."
Stay tuned for more in-depth reporting on Peter Ward's findings.
