Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Reggae connoisseurs who are accustomed to a laidback vibe should be prepared for a Michael Franti-level of energy when Anthony B takes the stage at the Knotty Pine tonight. The highly prolific Jamaican export has released 13 albums, more than 1,000 singles and appeared on more than 100 albums in the last 14 years. His new DVD, Anthony B Live, is a testament to the energy and message his music brings. The video was recorded at the 2008 Reggae Rising Music Festival in Humboldt, Calif. in front of 10,000 people.
Though he began his career at a time that when the trend of girl and gun lyrics were the new thing, Anthony B remained faithful to words of spiritual consciousness and social conviction, as heard on his new album, Rise. Tickets for tonight’s show are $22. The Knotty Pine can be reached at 208-787-2866.
•Guitarist-composer Brian Jordan is one of those musicians
you have to see in person. His jazz-funk-fusion licks have been in good hands over the years—predominately with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe for a seven-year stint. But his musical diversity has also paired the San Diego native with James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band and Fred Wesley.
His studio work features Jordan on more than just guitar and vocals—bass, keys, drums, percussion and overall production. Brian Jordan Trio, with bassist Andy Irvine (On the One) and drummer Dan Luehring (Tiny Television), will play at 9:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, at the Mangy Moose. $10 gets you in the door.
•Are you in that wintertime funk and ready for some bluesy tunes to help sooth the soul? Harmonica player and vocalist Jeff Newsom will join keyboardist Keith Phillips and bassist Phil Round for a themed night of blues, Friday at Warbirds Café in Driggs. The show will run 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and there’s no cover. Reservations can be made by calling 208-354-2550. PJH
