Jackson Hole, Wyo.-The Sheriff’s Office wants you to see the inside of its jails, but you might want to attend its open house to witness the expression on Capt. Tripp Wilson’s face when he takes 50,000 volts of electricity.
That’s right, Capt. Wilson will take a taser to the chest, which does not administer the more harmful ampere electric current, to disprove allegations about the “less-lethal” weapon.
The open house is Teton County Sheriff Jim Whalen’s attempt to educate the community about his office and to increase transparency.
He will cook burgers and hot dogs, he said, and the rest of the office will be showing off facilities and equipment. The Sheriff/Police SWAT team and the bomb squad will be on hand, the latter showing off a newly acquired bomb disposal robot.
Sergeant Andy Pearson said the robot, bought with funds from the Department of Homeland Security, allows law enforcement to approach and diffuse bombs without risking human life. Of the same design and function that U.S. forces overseas use to deal with explosives, the robot allows bomb technicians to remotely view, manipulate and disrupt a device.
The featured ac
t of the evening has got to be the tasing of Capt. Wilson. Detractors of the device say that it causes targets to urinate and defecate, uncontrollably, Sheriff Whalen said. Opponents also say some victims of a tase even die. Capt. Wilson wants to demonstrate that these allegations are not true.
He stressed that taser-side effects do not include the uncontrollable release of fluids, and that only poor training has resulted in taser-related deaths.
The Sheriff’s office will also show off another crowd-control device, known as a bean-bag shotgun. The gun will not be fired at the barbecue, but demonstrators will show visitors the ammunition as well as the gun itself.
Visitors won’t be able to see the inmate housing facility, but they will be able to go through the booking and dispatch control rooms.
The barbeque will probably be the only good time, and best food, you will have at the jail. And we can’t confirm this, but if you go and make friends with law enforcement, it might help you next time the red-and-blues light up your rearview mirror. JHW
The open house Barbeque is at noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Teton County Sheriff’s Office; free.
