Them on Us: Danger in the Snake; mistaken identity

Jackosn Hole, Wyo.-Please allow Them On Us to go all “Page Six” here and start spreading the gossip. According to the Ski Channel, many top celebs hit the slopes in JH this past winter. Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci both put their gigantic eyes under goggles last winter along with Matthew McConaughey. Our sources were told McConaughey kept his shirt on.

Last week, many locals caught a glimpse of a big guy in a little boat on the Snake River. That was none other than Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning – all 6’5”, 225 pounds of him stuffed into a kayak. Former VP Dick Cheney and Calista Flockhart were also spotted at the Fourth of July Parade, albeit not together.

Three Oar Deal turns deadly
Rexburg’s Standard Journal ran a piece on the loss of Boy Scout leader Craig McCuistion, 50, to a rafting accident in the Snake River last month. Besides providing the correct spelling of his name, we learned a few things about the section of river called Three Oar Deal where McCuistion was caught for a number of minutes in a hydraulic.

Several
bloggers responded to the story with their take on the dicey portion of the Snake.

“Three Oar Deal is a deceptively undangerous-looking feature and sneaks up on you if you don’t know where it is. The Forest Service should post a sign on the river telling boaters to keep to the right on that bend.”

“Three Oar Deal is not a rapid; it’s a river obstacle that EVERYBODY needs to avoid. This was the 5th or 6th Boy Scout troop to go into [that] hole this year!”

“At high flows (greater than 12,000 cfs) the hole at Three Oar Deal is possibly the most dangerous on the river. As the river turns to the right, the main current flows over a sandstone ledge protruding from the left creating a huge and potentially deadly reversal. This unassuming ledge has been the scene of a few horror stories and drowning incidents. The reversal can be easily avoided by maintaining an inside line on the right throughout the turn.”

Them on … Them
Sometimes, when combing sources for news on us, we are surprised to find news that we were sure was about us, but isn’t. For example, what if a headline read: “Teton County drug bust nets 55 pounds of marijuana.” Possibly, many readers have a roommate who routinely keeps similar amounts of grass in an Osprey pack under their bed.

The bust actually took place in Teton County, Montana, where local law enforcement teamed up with state and federal agencies to uncover two suspected high school traffickers – Chip Buckman and James Nutter. According to KFBB-TV, the sheriff’s office had been investigating the case since 2007.

F is for Fat
Adult obesity rates increased in 23 states, and did not decrease in a single state in the past year, according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America 2009, a report released earlier this month by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Wyoming placed respectably, holding steady at the 38th most obese state in the nation with some 24.3 percent of Wyomingites considered to be overweight. Colorado, those showoffs, ranked as the most fit in the country while Mississippi took the top spot, again, as America’s biggest porkers. JHW

However, in a 3rd (or is it 5th?) degree of seperation, the pot bust took place in the county where David Letterman has a home, Choteau being the county seat. Letterman has visited here a number of times. Does that work?
