CHIN’S GLOBAL Perspective
Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Jimmy Chin has a hundred pages in his passport. His 10 years of expeditions to places like Karakoram, the Himalaya, Mali, Borneo, and Patagonia have been boiled down to 20 photos for his show “Perspective: The Photography of Jimmy Chin” opening at the Oswald.

A professional climber, photographer and sponsored athlete by The North Face, Chin travels the globe shooting mountaineering expeditions, often for three or four clients at a time ranging from Microsoft to National Geographic.

Chin, who lives at the base of Teton Pass in Idaho, said he picked up photography inadvertently about 10 years ago when Mountain Hardwear selected some of his photos for their catalog. - HS

An artist’s reception for “Perspective: The Photography of Jimmy Chin,” is, 6 p.m,. Friday, at the Oswald Gallery, 165 N. Center Street. 734.8100.

Idaho hearts bikes
Getting tired of those Teton area pathways? Well, of course not, but nonetheless you might enjoy getting out of the valley for a bike ride in Southeastern Idaho. The Art M
useum of Eastern Idaho will host The Heart of Idaho Century Ride, this weekend, to raise money for its programs.

In addition to a 100-mile route through the upper Snake River Valley, the museum designed 25-mile, 50-mile and 62-mile routes and a route for kids. All routes start at the Snake River Landing in Idaho Falls.

More than 200 people from Idaho, Utah and Wyoming have already signed up for the race, according to museum spokesperson Miyai Griggs, and cyclists can register up to the day of the event.

The first year for the event, The Heart of Idaho was inspired by a museum exhibit, Cycles of Sam. Idaho resident Sam Bennett collected and designed bikes to explore the social history of bicycles as an art and a liberation. The exhibit also includes bike-inspired art by area artists. - MI

Day-of registration for The Heart of Idaho begins, 7 a.m., Saturday at Snake River Landing. $22 fee for 25-to 62-mile ride. $32 for a 100-mile ride. www.theartmuseum.org.

Goonie bike-in
The grass ampitheatre at the Center for the Arts is finally getting broken-in.
The second bike-in movie there this summer - an event that brings the romance of the drive-in to the urban-mountain lifestyle - screens Tuesday when “Wheels and Reels,” a collaboration between Teton Artlab and Hughes Production, brings Goonies to the big screen.

The 1985 film tells a classic adventure tale about lost treasure, teenage angst and love, set on the Pacific Northwest coast. Artlab director Travis Walker explained that the Goonies was selected for the first “Wheels and Reels,” because it offers a lot of opportunities for the audience to make jokes and exclamations outloud, which are essential for outdoor movie-watching. The movie also uses bicycle imagery well, Walker said.

Walker hopes to make a whole series of bike-in events next year, with the help of Hughes and other sponsors Friends of Pathways, Fitzgerald’s Bicycles and Snake River Brewing. If this week goes well, Walker said, there’ll be another bike-in held this September.

There will be beer available from Snake River Brewing. Make sure you bring a blanket. Last week’s bike-in was pretty cold. - HS
Goonies screens at 7:30, p.m., August 25, behind the Center Theater. $3 suggested donation. 733-4534.

Haworth shows new work
Ryan Haworth has a group of new paintings called “Us,” depicting icons from pop culture in thought-provoking scenes. They will show at Full Circle Frameworks beginning this weekend.

Haworth, one of the Jackson/Teton Valley’s best known artists, devoted a bulk of his creative energy to opening a new restaurant, Teton Thai, in Victor last year. When he recently learned that he will be a father, after so many other changes in his life, he had a bundle of creative energy to release which became “Us,” he said. - HS

“Us” opens, 6 p.m. Friday at Full Circle Frameworks and Gallery. 733-0770.

Dubmission: possible
Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary will host its first exclusively-dance party this Friday.

Dubmission will bring to the gallery reggae, dubstep, dancehall, and hip-hop spun by the likes of Mr. Whipple, the Selectress, El Jefe, Mikey Thunder, Daddy Long Legs and others.

The event is essentially a fundraiser for Jackson’s Burning Man contingency to build its art car.

McCandless said she hopes to host more events like this in the future, so keep it smooth! - HS

Dubmission  is 10 p.m., Friday at LMC, 130 S. Jackson Street. $5. 734-0649.
