Jackson Hole, Wyoming -
HEALTH Lama shares happy wisdomPhakchok Rinpoche, a jovial 28-year old reincarnate Buddhist lama, is coming back to town to talk about health, and becoming a budding Buddhist.
Rinpoche will speak at Teton Wellness Festival Sunday morning, and for a more intimate gathering that evening at the Center for the Arts (arrive early to guarantee admission). At the first event, Rinpoche will talk about health; something that has a vague meaning in the Buddhist realm, where the body is considered impermanent. Shlim said Rinpoche will address questions like “What if your body is healthy but your mind is not?” and “What if your mind is healthy but your body is not?”
Then, in the evening, Rinpoche will tell people who might have read a book on Buddhism or been inspired by the Dalai Lama to translate their interest in Buddhist philosophy to a tangible component of their lives.
-HSPhakchok will present “What is Health: A Tibetan Buddhist Perspective” at 11 a.m., Sunday, at Snow King for the Teton Wellness Festival, and then will present “What’s the Next Step” at 7 p.m., the same day, in Studio 1 at the Center for the Arts. 733-9355 or drshlim@wyom.net.WELLNESS Wellness fest invites communityThe Teton Wellness Festival is hosting a reception Friday afternoon to showcase some healthy vendors and bring the Jackson Hole community in to see what wellness in the Tetons is all about.
The kickoff event will fill the lobby of the Center Theater with healthy treats, tea, beer, wine and art. “Eat, Love, Play” provides an opportunity to lend a hand to a community mural, and meet and greet some of the towns holistic vendors.
The Whole Grocer provides appetizers and elixirs from its tonic bar. The Dragon Lady Heather Bupp serves tea, and their will be wine from Ten Spoon and beer from Snake River Brewing will enhance the music of Judd Grossman and Eddie Anders. Grossman is a Chazan, or music minister, with the Jackson Hole Jewish Community, and Anders is the resident artist at River Crossing Church. They will perform a World Music Days tribute to Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter killed in Pakistan in 2002.
The mural echoes the theme of this year’s festival: “Pursue your Purpose.” Local muralist Wendell Field will write the slogan, and art supplies will be available for people to customize their mural with their own interpretation of those words.
- HSThe event, which is the preamble to Mimi Guarneri’s keynote presentation, begins at 4:30, Friday, at the Center for the Arts. Free, but Guarneri’s talk is not.PARTY ‘Twilight’ fundraiser for ski/snowboard clubA one-off party planned for this weekend with local bands and deejays will benefit the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.
Snowboarder Rob Kingwill and his apparel company, Avalon 7, are asking locals to come out dressed as werewolves and vampires to support ski club kids programs, and if that’s not reason enough, then just to have a howling good time.
Kingwill wants to give local partygoers a place to hang, outside of local bars, and he thinks that Snow King is a much underused venue, Jackson’s “crown jewel,” even.
Rock bands Yeti and Rotating Superstructure will set the scene with a trio of deejays – Cutter, Vert-One and RichieBeats – for the nightstalkers.
Expecting to host more parties at the King, Kingwill said that Euro-trash and
“Dukes of Hazard“ themes top his list. –
JHW StaffThe Twilight Party will be at 8 p.m, Saturday, in the Lodge Room of Snow King Center, at the base of Snow King Mountain. $8 at Hoback Sports, Jackson Treehouse and the Boardroom, or $10 at the door
LITERATURE Latino stories at libraryLucia Gonzales is a Latina Librarian and storyteller originally from Cuba.
At her performance at the Teton County Library this week, a bi-lingual family event, she will act-out a few stories of traditional Cuban folklore. One will be the tale of Martina the cockroach, a vain little cockroach who is looking for a husband, and another a tale about how the rabbit tricked his more powerful brother, the Lion.
Then, Gonzales will read from her book of historical fiction, The Storytellers Candle, about the first Latina Librarian hired by the New York Public Library to reach out to the Latin community in the area known today as Spanish Harlem. -
