Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Skiing Magazine has named Grand Targhee Resort in Alta the “greenest ski resort.” In a feature called “Skiing’s Green All Stars,” the magazine lauded Targhee for its decision to invest in retrofitting the resort rather than just paying a premium to buy carbon dioxide offsets, as has become the practice throughout much of the ski resort industry.
A comprehensive energy audit of the resort –from weed whackers to chairlifts– revealed annual emissions to the tune of 2,958 tons per year, as Skiing Magazine pointed out, and now the ‘Ghee is painstakingly working to retrofit itself from the top down.
“While we are proud of what we have been able to accomplish, we aren’t perfect,” said Christina Thomure, sustainability director for Targhee. She added, “[We] understand that being sustainable is as much about committing to the process as about implementing changes.” JHW
