Jackson Hole, Wyo.-How many photo contests can one valley support? Since JH Weekly’s inaugural Winterscapes contest around this time last year, at least three other local organizations have asked area photographers to submit their best work for the scrutiny and judgment of people who share their aesthetic intrique probably as much as a wildlife photographer can appreciate trophy hunting.
On the other hand, a photograph might be the closest humans come to sharing an objective reality, if we consider the photographer’s perspective to be no more than where she happened to be standing at the time, composition to be no more than the angle from which she shoots and light to be no more than some combination of the environment and the abilities of her camera. This, of course, we can’t say.
But what we can do is experience something wonderful in a photograph, and then create a dialogue about perspective, composition and light that defends or otherwise explains our visceral enchantment with the image.
This is more-or-less how we chose the winners of Winterscapes 2010. It’s an amateur contest, determined by an anonymous process. Only after the winners had been chosen did we argue about our favorites, but we certainly did agree that Jackson Hole can’t have enough photo contests – there are many good photos that deserve to be seen. -MI
The winning photographs of Winterscapes 2010 will be on display at a reception with booze and the winning photographers, beginning 5:30 p.m., Thursday, at Full Circle Frameworks, 335 N. Glendwood.
