Jackson Hole, Wyo.-State lawmakers may be close to passing a bill that would impose stiff sentencing on offenders who sexually assault children.
Named after a Florida girl who was murdered by a sex offender, the Jessica’s Law bill places a minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years on adults who commit sexual intercourse on a child 12 or under.
Teton County Rep. Keith Gingery has unsuccessfully introduced the bill repeatedly during past legislative sessions. Thought it passed the House last year, it went on to die in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gingery said. A partnership with a Cheyenne legislator this year helped get it into the hands of a different committee, where it may have a better chance of becoming law.
