Roots reggae band Katchafire was a no-show on Sunday at the 6th Annual Targhee Fest on Sunday. Wild speculation was that the New Zealand-based band caught a heady buzz and spaced its show, but the truth is in the details, which the band’s booking agent totally overlooked.
Katchafire were booked to play in Aspen, Colo., on Saturday night, the day before its Targhee gig. The band’s road manager, Carole Baguio, was told it would take just four or five hours to drive up to Grand Targhee. Sure. If Michael Andretti or Tony Stewart were driving the tour bus at a steady 108 miles per hour and refueling on the fly. According to Mark Taylor, Katchafire’s promoter, Baguio learned the 540-mile drive would actually take 11 hours just days before the show in Wyoming. She looked into flying the seven-piece band from Denver into Jackson, but that would have cost $4,000.
“Naturally, the band was upset,” said Taylor. “[Targhee Fest] was one of the highlights of the tour.” After a very lengthy band meeting, the group decided that they wouldn’t be able to put on a proper show given the circumstances.
“[The band] was extremely disappointed. They’ve never missed a gig before,” Taylor said.
