Them on Us: Old habits are hard to break

The adult movie industry will never get used to condoms, and it seems JH Weekly editor Richard Abowitz will not shed his second skin either. Abowitz covered Las Vegas and its cine skin trade for more than a decade as a senior writer and editor at Las Vegas Weekly. Before coming to Jackson, Abowitz also penned for the Los Angeles Times and has been contributing to Rolling Stone since 1996.

Abowitz couldn’t resist the opportunity to double down on his weekly writing assignments and attend the Adult Entertainment Expo at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, covering the gala for the The Daily Beast. The JH Weekly editor found mostly outrage and pushback amongst industry heavies concerning the new city ordinance passed in Los Angeles earlier this month banning bareback porn scenes.
Many insiders told Abowitz the issue was intrusive government control. The industry currently self-regulates. Most shoots take place outside of LA city limits. If LAPD truly cracked down, the remaining studios would likely leave town, Abowitz wrote.

Better late than never
Back when the Pittsburgh Steelers still had Super Bowl ambitions, Jackson Hole resident Don Watkins was caught by Bleacher Report attending a Steelers-Rams game at Heinz Field. Watkins was photographed with Santa Claus rocking a Troy Polamalu jersey. Watkins and Polamalu shared another thing in common that afternoon – neither made a tackle all game.

Watkins grew up just outside of Pittsburgh shredding the scene at tiny Laurel Highland Mountains. He can now be found in Jackson Hole anywhere there is powder.

Famed director will shoot in Jackson Hole
American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and actor Quentin Tarantino recently told the Wyoming Film Office he will shoot a small portion of his upcoming movie, Django Unchained, in Jackson Hole.

The movie will shoot primarily in New Orleans beginning in February. It has been held up waiting for Leonardo DiCaprio to finish shooting in The Great Gatsby in Australia. Tarantino’s script calls for a brief scene in a “snowy landscape.” After some negotiations with the Wyoming Film Office, Tarantino agreed to bring his production here. Numerous Tarantino sightings place the popular director in the valley this winter.

The Weinstein Company hopes to release the film next Christmas. Anyone interested in being an extra when the film company arrives for shooting should contact the Wyoming Film Office, www.filmwyoming.com.

An early movie poster features Will Smith for the lead role. Smith reportedly turned down the part. It was recast with Jamie Foxx in the lead. Leonardo DiCaprio plays an evil plantation owner and Austrian actor Christopher Waltz (Inglorious Basterds) plays a German tracker hired to hunt down escaped slave Django (Foxx). Tarantino calls the movie “a southern” – a spaghetti western set in the south.

Super Bowl of dog mushing begins this weekend
Uinta County is getting jacked up for the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR) scheduled to mush through Evanston, Lyman and Mountain View the first week of February. The Bridger Valley Pioneer (Lyman) wrote up the event on Monday.

The Pioneer reported Uinta County has added a second day (stage) to its portion of the race. A meet-and-greet BBQ with the mushers is slated for February 1 at the Roadhouse in Evanston. Mountain View is planning to host its popular Musher Mania from 4 to 7 p.m., on Friday, February 4. The Flapjack Frenzy follows at the Heritage Barn in Lyman on Saturday.

Uinta County has expanded its race participation, offering two stages on Thursday and Friday.

“Uinta County has been a fantastic supporter of the IPSSSDR,” Race Director Frank Teasley told the Pioneer. “We are thrilled about the second day we will have in Uinta County.”

The IPSSSDR is the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states. Teasley, a local musher based in Granite Creek, organized the event in 1996 to shed light on the sport of dogsled racing. Twenty-two teams will race through 10 Wyoming communities from Jan. 27 through Feb. 4, kicking off in Jackson this Friday and wrapping up in Park City, Utah.
