JACKSON HOLE, WYO-Looking to spruce up the entryway to your
home? If you’re still searching for that personal touch to make your
log cabin stand out from all the others, consider bidding on one of the
Town Square’s elk antler arches as part of the Boy Scouts’ annual Elk
Antler Auction on May 19.
The four arches are at least
50-years-old and for the first time, one of the arches, the one that
marks the southwest entrance to the Square, will be up for public
auction.
The Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Town of Jackson, is spearheading the effort to replace the aging arches.
Funds
from the auction will help with the arch replacement effort. Each arch
is estimated to contain approximately 2,000 antlers weighing 7,000 to
10,000 pounds and is being sold “as is” with no guarantee as to the
final weight or condition.
In the past, full newer
antlers have averaged about $10 per pound. The arch will be sold as one
piece; individual antlers will not be sold from it. The final
price of the arch includes delivery of the disassembled arch anywhere
in Jackson Hole.
Shipping outside of the valley is the
responsibility of the buyer. If you want to help raise money for the
effort but aren’t looking to acquire a massive antler arch, you can
enter a contest to guess how many elk antlers are in the arch.
Each
guess costs $5, with half of the proceeds going to the lucky winner and
half back to the Rotary Club for purchasing more antlers for the
project.
The Rotary Club will guarantee $1,000 to the
winner who will be announced in front of the newly constructed arch at
a dedication after the 4th of July Parade.
On May 29, the
Public Works Department will begin disassembling and replacing the
arch, which could take up to three weeks. If needed, they will replace
any metal framing and other structural materials that help support the
arch.
For further information or to purchase a ticket to guess
the quantity of antlers in the arch, contact Pete Karns at 307-732-7474
or T.R. Pierce at 307-732-3050.
