Extra daylight a boost
Despite its early arrival, which will no doubt catch more than a few
people off-guard, the beginning of Daylight Saving Time this Sunday
reminds me of my childhood and summers past.
Staying outside in the cool blue dusk playing kickball as a kid,
grilling up some burgers and, nowadays, tipping a few back, I love when
it’s light out late into the evening.
I’m far more inclined to get outside and stay outside. Maybe I should move to Alaska for half the year …
Whether adding a month to Daylight Saving Time will actually help us save energy, I don’t know.
What I do know is that those extra hours of daylight at the end of my
long work day will go a long way to making this writer happier and
healthier.

‘Correction’ or crisis?
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m hardly a savvy investor.
In fact, I know precious little about the stock market and even less about all that other high finance stuff.
What I do know (because it’s been repeated to me about a thousand
times) is that over the course of its 100-year history, the stock
market has gone up on average 10 or 11 percent a year.
Yes, there have been plenty of dips and dives along the way, but the trend has held strong for a long time.
So I’m confused why the financial world’s heart skipped a beat last
week when markets took a dive – or made a “correction,” as I’ve also
heard it called.
Is that spiel about the market’s historical return just something brokers say to get rubes like me to play their game?
Or is the doom-and-gloom reporting on the market’s tumble the work of
an ignorant and/or sensational media? Or maybe there’s a third option
that someone could fill me in on.
