That there speech team done good
Good thing I’m not a member of the Jackson Hole High School Speech and
Debate Team because I surely would have detracted from the point total
that won them third place at states.
Congratulations to the team and to the three JHHS students who
qualified to represent the Wind River District at the National
competition this summer. Sophmore Nina Palomba, Junior Jordan Schreiber
and Senior James Hockett will head to the Sunflower State (Kansas that
is) June 17-22.
Six other students also qualified as alternates. In a remarkable streak
perhaps unparalleled by any other local high school club or team, JHHS
has qualified students for the national tourney nine years in a row.
Tonight, oratory enthusiasts have a chance to see these talking, debating all-stars in action.
Join the Speech and Debate Team 7-8:30 p.m. in the high school library as they present various pieces from this year’s circuit.
Also stayed tuned to help the team raise money to send these kids to nationals.

Four Years Gone
Whether you believe the United States’ “War on Terror” is good for the
country and the world or that it’s a bloody boondoggle of epic
proportions, it’s only appropriate to observe Monday’s fourth
anniversary of occupation of Iraq with solemn reflection.
So far, more than 3,200 American troops have lost their lives there, and an estimated 25,000 have been wounded.
No one has any real idea how many Iraqis have been killed or maimed in
the chaos, and it would appear that we’ve all lost count of how much
the country have spent on toppling the despotic regime of the late
Saddam Hussein and attempting to facilitate a transition to a peaceful,
democratic form of government.
Some U.S. officials have all but given up on that goal, saying the
Iraqis and the world will just have to accept a certain amount of
violence for the foreseeable future.
It is the nature of human beings to glean even a little good from even
the darkest evil. I suppose getting rid of Saddam counts.
Other than that, all we can hope is that a lot of families and
communities that lost sons and daughters, mothers and fathers came
closer together in their grief.
