Multiple grocery store stops getting me down
I think this is the first place I’ve ever lived where I regularly hit
up two or three different grocery stores, occasionally in the same
shopping trip. Everywhere else I’ve lived, I’ve been able to find the
specific foods, quality produce and deli items I want in the same
store. That doesn’t seem to happen in Jackson.
I tend to hit up the Jackson Whole Grocer for the majority of my
shopping needs, but I’ve taken to traveling down to Smith’s when I’m
making big produce purchases. The quality, and often the variety, is
just plain better.
The broccoli doesn’t turn soft and rubbery within a day or two and the
fruit is almost always sweet and juicy. I try to avoid Albertson’s
because it is ridiculously expensive and there are much better deals to
be had at the other two groceries.
But when it’s time to refill a prescription or to buy that oddball item I can’t find anywhere else, to Albie’s I go.
Ultimately, Smith’s doesn’t have quite the organic foods, natural goods
and bulk selection that the Whole Grocer does, while the Whole Grocer
just doesn’t have the reliable produce that Smith’s carries. Until one
store steps up, I guess I’m stuck two-stop shopping.

May 15: ‘Global Don’t Buy Gas Day’
Since the late ’90s the Internet has buzzed about staying away from the
pumps on a particular day in protest of high gas prices. This year’s
version: On May 15th all myspace.com members should avoid gas stations
in protest of high gas prices.
There are 72,110,073 members currently on the network, and the average
car takes about $20 to $30 to fill up. If all myspace members forgo the
pump on the 15th, so the theory goes, it would take $2,163,302,190.00
out of the oil companies’ pockets. So let’s try to put a dent in
the oil industry for at least one day.
Wrong! You’ll just buy gas the day before or the day after, and the
only one who will see any change in profits is the small independent
gas station owner, who has no control over gas prices and operates on
small profit margins.
If you really want to stick it to the man, try cutting oil consumption
out of your life. Sell your car, take the bus, ride your bike, and stop
using oil – then you won’t even care what gas prices are.
