Rise of the Locals
Earlier this month, driving towards town around noon near the Virginian Lodge, I could only think of that scene in the film “Terminator 2” when the main character, Sarah Connor, narrates, “Three billion human lives ended on Aug. 29th, 1997. The survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day.” While she narrates, the film shows Los Angels traffic, haze from smog, and then people bursting into flames.
At the time, with all the tourist traffic in Jackson, the haze from forest fires and the heat, our town looked just a little like director James Cameron’s apocalyptic vision. It’s almost Aug. 29, 2007, and today, you can tell there is a hint of fall weather. The tourists are dissipating. The exodus has begun.
Left-hand turns are getting easier in town, and soon the tourists will be gone. Oh, sweet baby Jesus! We almost have our town back! For some, it may mean fewer tips, less money, and the beginning of another down-and-out, dead-broke off-season. But the mountains don’t cost money and soon we will have them back all to ourselves.

Still, things continue to go off here, this place that can grab you firmly round the waist and fling you toward the heavens (unless you’re temporarily over it, in which case it sucks).
D’ya know what went off last weekend? Opera. And a Scottish festival! When one thinks of Jackson Hole’s charms, especially where young people are concerned, it’s of course the mountains and the sub-communities that simultaneously encourage ripping them or boast about said ripping. Come to think of it, bro-brahism has seemed a bit on the ebb of late. Is snuffing the bro-brah the new black? Nah, it’ll be back when the snow returns, fret ye not.
Anyhow, for those who rarely attend such cultural happenings, check one out for a change. There’s often a friendly lot and, not uncommonly, free wine.
Check the Galaxy calendar published weekly in
Planet Jackson Hole, and either solo or with a friend, go do something not usually associated with our little mountain town.
Or don’t. Whatever.
