Happy Hillary Halloween

Some announcements just cry out for attention and this is one of them. The Associated Press just released the results of their Ipsos survey which indicates that New York Senator, Hillary Clinton (D) has won yet another poll. She was the top choice when people were asked which 2008 presidential candidate would make the scariest Halloween costume. Senator Clinton captured 37 percent of the vote, more than any other candidate, Republican or Democrat. Senator Clinton, the Democratic front runner for the presidency seems to have done it again. Who could have guessed that she would have such a commanding lead in such an all important survey?

Forty percent of voting men chose Hillary as the scariest costume, while 66 percent of voting women swore she was the scariest presidential candidate costume. Two-thirds of Republicans voted for her and a surprising 18 percent of Democrats did as well. Could it be that she scares the bejeezus out of her constituency? By now you may be wondering who the runner up was. Former New York Mayor and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani received 14 percent of the vote. Seventeen percent of the voting men chose Rudy Giuliani while 12 percent of the voting women felt he was the scariest.

No contest: Hillary wins hands down! No other presidential candidate received more than 6 percent of the total vote. It remains to be seen how this exciting turn of events will translate into votes come November 4th. Will Hillary command the sympathy vote or does scary somehow translate into a good quality? Only time and your vote will tell. The Ipsos survey was conducted by telephone October 16-18 and sampled more than 1,000 adults. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Do we really need to wear political Halloween costumes? Come on folks, even Hillary has feelings and a family that loves her. Well, at least Chelsea loves her. Anyone who wears a Rudy Giuliani costume has got to know that the Mafia is out get him. I can see it all now, mobs of big bruisers chasing little Giulianis all over the neighborhood while waving their guns in the air. Can’t we all just get along? What happened to the good old days when we only had Dick Nixon to kick around? What we really need is a survey of past and present political Halloween costumes. How would Hillary Clinton stack up against say Dick Nixon or for that matter how would she stack up against Bill Clinton?

Now that’s a scary thought! Would Jimmy Carter be loved as a humanitarian or loathed as being outspoken? Would Al Gore be cherished for his work on global warming or chided for supposedly inventing the internet? Would Ross Perot be found scary for his prominent ears or lovable for the same?

And what about our founding fathers? Would Thomas Jefferson be lauded for writing the Declaration of Independence or lambasted for being a slave owner? Would George Washington be teased for his powdered wig or revered for his patient guidance of a newly formed nation?

You see, it’s all about perception. One person’s dream candidate is another person’s nightmare.  I for one, think that all our political candidates work very hard in a thankless society. Instead of mocking them we should praise them for doing what very few have the courage to do. How many of our readers would be able to swallow their pride while watching an army of youngsters march by wearing a costume with a likeness of them, while they mock and denigrate your image? Why has it become OK to make fun of those we disagree with?

When did we become so callous that we care little for the feelings of those who represent us while we appear to have the answers to all the world’s problems? How about a little bit of kindness to go with the festive season of Halloween? After all, the kids don’t know any better, but the parents do!
