When public goes private
<This letter was edited for length. - Eds>
The trend of private corporations maneuvering to take control of public assets is evident in the latest scheme proposed for our St. John’s Hospital. The people of Teton County and the Town of Jackson have supported the hospital with millions in public money over the years and now a newly formed private corporation has its sights set on acquiring control of our hospital and its assets.
Our public officials should resist these takeover attempts. Our constitution prohibits the government using public assets for the benefit of private corporations.
Just because a private corporation thinks it can do a better job of running the show does not mean that they have a right to supersede the people’s constitutional rights to the disposition of our public assets. Please speak to the County Commissioners and let them know that you want St. John’s to remain as it is.

As the County Commissioners review Teton Meadows I hope that they will keep in mind that many people made investment decisions when they purchased their homes in South Park. As the Teton Meadows proposal advances, it brings 500 houses to a pasture zoned for 50 houses. It lowers the property values of the neighboring residents.
Workers deserve to own their entire home without the ‘cap on resale’ and participate in the prosperity of this great country, even if it means commuting. Employers will have to pay wages high enough to compensate workers for the commute.
I suggest that we change the Housing Authority. First, sell the ‘cap on resale’ back to the affordable housing residents so they can own their property. Then we should spend those proceeds on START to provide efficient and affordable commuter service to Alpine and Victor. The Housing Authority should continue with a small rental-only housing program without density upgrades for core infrastructure workers like deputies and teachers and rent to them at rates well below the market rate.
If, for instance, teachers, worked for 30 years, they would earn a lifetime lease on their house, but if they quit early to sell real estate, they would have to move out. This makes for a more sustainable program.
- Justin AdamsKelly, Wyo.Whose Bible is it anyway?<This letter was edited for length. - Eds>
I wish Christians and Jews who support our government’s pre-emptive war agenda would listen to their Scriptures and hearts, rather than to politicians, preachers, or pundits.
“Protect me from men of violence, who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day,” reads Psalm 140:1-2. Sounds eerily like Bush/Cheney, and now McCain.
“You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the Lord abhors,” reads Psalm 5:6. “God hates…hands that shed innocent blood,” Proverbs 6:16-17.
“Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! They speak of you [God] with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name.” Psalm 139:19-20. “The unfaithful have a craving for violence.” Proverbs 13:2.
War is profitable, but the ONLY ones who profit from an unjust and aggressive war are the military-industrial complex and their cartels, and the state. It is time for believers in God (and all people of conscience) to resist this evil.
“I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war.” Psalm 120:7
Sounds eerily like Ron Paul.
- Bob StuartJackson, Wyo.Super Tornado Tuesday<This letter was edited for length. - Eds>
The Republican Party continues to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to the realities of global warming. Will the deadly tornadoes [on Super Tuesday] finally yank them out of their delusion? Their own voting populations are suffering, even dying.
You don’t need to be a scientist to grasp that increasing C02 emissions can throw our climate out of balance. The technology exists to co-create a sustainable future, but these developments are being suppressed from the greed-induced blindness of our current feudalistic administration.
We can steer this nation to safer shores, but not with another Republican in the White House. Please use common sense in
the upcoming elections and vote for a Democrat. Our collective future depends on it.
