Local gun class is a blast

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-The recent spate of horrific shootings around the nation will predictably give rise to a call for more restrictions on American’s gun rights. These crimes were committed by mentally disturbed individuals and do not justify further limitations on the rights of law-abiding citizens.

As a matter of fact, with a faltering economy and predictions of increased crime, many people think now is the time to purchase a gun for self-defense. Though interested, a lack of knowledge and experience with firearms may be a deterrent. If so, the Jackson Police Department can help.

Twice a year they offer a two-week Public Firearms Training class. I’m in their spring session, which consists of 12 classroom hours, and six hours of range practice.

Men and women sign up for different reasons. Some have never handled a gun before and are curious – “Is this for me?” Others seek familiarity and experience before purchasing a gun for home protection. And some take the course to fulfill a requirement for a concealed weapons permit.

With firearms, safety is first and foremost, and is stressed from the beginning. We learned how revolvers and semi-automatic pistols operate, and their pros and cons. Fundamentals of handgun shooting, including sight alignment, stance, grip and trigger squeeze came next.

How to deal with fear and its attendant psychological and physiological responses was emphasized. Sgt. Alan John, a black belt in jujitsu (don’t mess with him), even taught us some basic skills to escape from an attacker, and to create space to flee or defend. The legal guidelines and ramifications of gun ownership and use are also covered.

Then came our first day on the range. That was fun. We shot revolvers and semi-autos at targets about 8 feet away, which was humbling – but practice makes perfect. I’m sure I’ll improve next week.

If you’re like me, cops make you nervous. Our teachers, officers Cole Nethercott, Frederic O’Connor and Alan John (sorry if I’m forgetting anyone) are curing me of that. You won’t find a nicer, more professional and competent group of guys anywhere. Jackson is lucky to have them.

The terrible mass murders of the last few weeks are big news, which is natural. What the press never reports, though, are the countless instances of lives that are saved by responsible gun owners. These untold stories are a testament to the need to preserve our gun rights.

The right of honest citizens to carry a concealed weapon is particularly important. Thousands of violent crimes occur outside the home, and to deny individuals the right to defend themselves is unconscionable. Many terrible crimes could be prevented or abruptly ended were an armed citizen present.
So, if you’re thinking now might be the time to exercise your second amendment rights, the Public Firearms Training class is a great place to start. PJH
