The tin foil blues

By Bob Stuart

My friends think I’m a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy nut. OK, so yeah, I think there’s a lot more to reality than meets the six o’clock news, the Daily, and NPR (thank God for the Internet).

For example, if you listen to mainstream news sources, you’re bound to think most politicians are honest, sincere public servants who have our best interests at heart – and we know that’s a crock. Since my youth I’ve known their throats are nothing but open graves (with the exception of Ron Paul and a few others).

We’re conditioned to believe if something’s not discussed in the news, it’s a fringe idea not worthy of consideration. Our worldview is shaped by the media, and few dare think outside the idiot box. And if you do, you’re pilloried into silence.

Yes, we have a free press. They can and do explore a myriad of subjects, but there are places they fear to tread – hallowed ground they dare not violate. They’ll go after a rotten politician, but fear revealing the government itself to be rotten and evil.

Oh, I failed to mention, I’m pretty cynical as well. I believe Lord Acton’s statement, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” We’ve lost sight of that reality as we’re told that only a bigger, more powerful government can fix problems like terrorism, global warming, swine flu, and economic meltdown.

I guess that’s why I’m a libertarian at heart. I believe in freedom and the ability of free people (and a truly free market) to solve the bulk of our problems. Every time government grows and assumes new power, individual freedom is lost. As power is concentrated at the national and international level, individuals are rendered impotent.

But getting back to my tin hat, I have a few questions I’ve never received an answer for. I want to know why a defense department that receives hundreds of billions of dollars to protect America failed to defend our capital and largest, most important city on 9/11. What the hell are we paying them for?

And why, after the biggest crime in American history, did our government refuse to investigate it? It’s like they had a pre-planned explanation, and couldn’t be bothered with an investigation, until some 9/11 widows forced their hand. And what we got (the 911 Commission Report) is an acknowledged whitewash.

I’d also like to know why the press is playing favorites with the global warming issue. I know for a fact that thousands of scientists are critical of the man-made global warming alarmist scenario, but it’s not reported.

I think it’s all about concentrating power and wealth. Crises (real, imagined, or manufactured) are used to frighten people into submitting to big government solutions. And those entities close to government (like the military industrial complex) benefit.

And you can believe me, because I received this information beamed directly from aliens into my tin foil hat. PJH

Uh oh, Bob, you're talking like a true conservative and not a member of todays GOP. For two columns in a row, you've gone against your party with ideas like keeping government out of the bedroom, fiscal restraint, and corporate (as well as government) transparency and accountability. Watch your step or you'll be following in Arlen Specter and Joe the Plumber's footsteps and running away from Dick Cheney!

Hey, I am searching for newer articles... where are they? I love the perspectives you put out there!

Amen Mr. Stewart! I don't think 911 was a conspiracy beyond what any government conpiracy is... stealing a third of the fruits of my labor is kinda a big deal to me...

What you fail to realize is that government IS often the best solution. It has won many wars that we could not have won on our own, ie ... an excellent educational system through No Child Left Behind, winning the war on drugs, reversing this millennium's planet temperature, recycling paper initiatives (so that tree farms don't have to plant more trees) and we almost caught Osama ... this could not have been done privately.
