Give Beck a break
Mike Bressler’s Public Editor column is usually hilarious, and last week’s column (Theater and Glenn Beck, JH Weekly 6/23/10) got off to a great start in the first paragraph by tweaking JH Weekly’s recent theater binge. Unfortunately, from that point on Bressler seems to have temporarily lost his sense of humor.
His rant against Glenn Beck contained more hatred and name-calling than I’ve ever heard from Glenn Beck. Beck’s TV show is definitely over the top, but his role as kooky watchdog is both entertaining and valuable. I would describe his TV persona as unhinged, but never vicious. I actually prefer Beck’s radio show which is really funny. On the radio Beck’s heated rhetoric is tempered by a healthy dose of self-deprecating humor. Rather than berate Beck Bressler should take a lesson from him.

The Grand ExperimentThe Fourth of July. American Independence Day. What is its meaning? This is a celebrated day of significance recognized from the year of 1776; when 56 spirited men risked the noose of treason by boldly and unanimously putting their pens to a document, written in their expressed conviction, pronouncing their America as an independent nation free from any rule whatsoever other than their own. Hence began the Grand Experiment.
Now that nearly two and one half centuries have passed since that day, in our present America it may appear that the independence these pioneering men had laid plans to have somewhat waned. Our seemingly dependence on foreign oil, foreign finance and inferior foreign imports would not signify the self-sufficiency these early Americans may have aspired to. It is also apparently appropriate to mention that in the opined views of the average American citizen the only American export is that of American jobs. The Experiment seems to be awry.
Despite these present backslides, which are not unlike many before, this nation always seems to rise above the turbulent waves for a fresh breath and somehow becomes better for it. I, for one, maintain a confidence that this Grand Experiment shall and will persevere.
So on this July 4th let us all, at least inspirationally, put aside all of the self-interests that have our occupation of mind and commemorate the glorious cause in what Americans define as independence.

CorrectionJH Weekly’s incorrectly labeled and credited a photo in the summer guide. The photo of JoJo’s Mardi Gras Band, which contained only one member of the band Widespread Panic, should have been credited to PGA Music. We regret the error. PERMALINK:
