Money and ego
Aaron Wallis' controversial Art Fair column from two week's ago prompted me to re-examine the compromises I've made in my life as a musician. There is a big discussion to be had regarding the motivations of those who aspire to practice a craft or create art, and whether those motivations define the terms. I don't claim to have the definitive answer, but I'm confident that a spirit of service can temper the potentially corrupting influences of money and ego.

Petroff and Pierce
Congratulations to RuthAnn Petroff for prioritizing platforms over Party, and to GOP Chairman T.R. Pierce for defending her!

Moderates seldom vote in GOP Primaries; so the right wing nominates extremists with positions that are anathema to us, and then has the nerve to call us RINOs (Republicans in Name Only). I fear they'd call Eisenhower a RINO.

I make my Congressional contributions through J Street -- a Jewish-American lobby that opposes Israel's colonies on the West Bank. It was organized in 2008 to offset the influence of AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), which supports the colonies.

Muslims have other grievances against us, but none to just, so inflammatory, and so easily redressed as our funding for those colonies. They help al Qaeda recruit terrorists against our forces and against our homeland.

Alas, J Street could find only one Republican candidate to endorse! What does that say about us Republicans?

Surely our forces and our homeland are more important than loyalty to a Party kidnapped by the right wing

Behind the façade of freedom
I believe with a sincerity that I may speak for a majority of American citizens when I state that our presence in Afghanistan has become redundantly ridiculous, embarrassingly demoralizing along with the shamefully unnecessary loss of lives.
This nation’s leaders have constantly harped for the past nine years with the antiquated motto of "fighting for our freedom" to the point of perversion in its true meaning. As an ever increasing amount of Americans are becoming aware of, our freedom is not at stake and does not require our imposing presence in the far reaches of the Middle East and our involvement in their pestilent ancient tribal feuds.

In the same breath that our political leaders cacophonize on the necessity of these inane conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan they warble their blues regarding the slow recovery of the economy and the job market. As an ever increasing amount of Americans hope for their future ebbs close to disparity, billions of dollars are funneled to the above said war effort with no positive results. I shall admit that I am not one with the covert knowledge of political chess but it would seem to be a play of logic to convert those billions towards rebuilding our own inner national strength.

As American citizens, let us not be duped by the aristocratically orchestrated horn section in Washington D.C. who trumpet their muzak from behind an Ozian façade of freedom. Let us awaken to the priorities of what is requisite for our needs at home and to regain our strength as a nation.

God Bless Bob Morris. After being around here nearly 30 years and seeing countless changes in the valley, both good and bad, I have peace of mind knowing rock-solid Bob keeps rolling along. Long live the Captain! But, Bob, you're a little off on your assessment of the Ruth Ann kerfuffle. No one doesn't love Ruth Ann, community benefactor, contributor and, yes, leader. But now, she's gone all political on us, running for office, and that entails some hard choices. Choices she has to make about which side of important issues she takes. She owes it to the public. She's no longer just a voter, she wants to be a political leader. So far, her campaign of big warm fuzzy "Balance" isn't cutting it. That's great when you're donating food, organizing a fund raiser, or hosting a political soireee in your restaurant. But even Perle Mesta had a political opinion. I don't begrudge her doing business with local democrats, voting for people she knows and likes from the opposing party, or even holding an opposing party opinion. This is still a very centrist county (and state, believe it or not), and voters cross party lines in the polls all the time). But as a candidate she has taken a stand, as a member of one party. Which should mean she is in line with a majority of what's on the party platform (do the republicans have one, T.R.?). She shouldn't just be mining a political party just because they have the largest voter base going to the polls. As long as there are political parties, the NaG article was right on questioning her republican bonafides. People were talking about it. I hope she steps up and speaks up, soon. By the way, you're right. T.R. Pierce did a great job defending his good friend Ruth Ann Petroff. But the chairman of the Teton County Republicnan Party fell down when it came time to defend his party and policies by letting her off the hook when her loyalty was legimately questioned. How will she do in a debate? Time will tell.

Well said Patrik!
