Today is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birthday. Dickens’ family passed through disfiguring economic devastation as a child, and, as an adult, he became the great novelist of urban exploitation and suffering. In the era of Occupy Wall Street, it is tempting to see Dickens as the author who held up the 99 percent for admiration while focusing his satire on the wretched greed of the 1 percent. ...
