know Vino: CROSSING VINEYARDS SIGNATURE SERIES

By Tyler Alford

Less than 35 miles outside of the Philadelphia metropolis is Washington Crossing, Penn. This small town, formerly known as “Taylorsville,” is famous for George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River on December 25, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, later notably portrayed by painter Emanuel Leutze.

This Christmas Day crossing led to the surprise attack victory against Hessian forces in the Battle of Trenton. The United States suffered only three casualties in the skirmish. Crossing Vineyards is also located in the town of Washington Crossing. Pennsylvania is the United States’ eighth largest wine producer and is home to more than 100 wineries and five distinct American Viticultural Areas. William Penn (the state’s namesake) planted the first vinifera vines in the United States in 1683.

Crossing Vineyards was started in 2000 by the Carroll family and boasts an impressive collection of regional awards. The winery’s 2006 Signature Series Merlot won a gold medal at the 2009 Keystone Wine Competition and a silver medal at the 2009 Finger Lakes International Competition. Pennsylvania’s cooler eastern climate and rolling hills calms the tannins for Cr
ossing Vineyards Merlot and lends a long and smooth finish. For George Washington,

“A glass of wine and a bit of mutton are always ready,” he once said. Skip the mutton with this bottle and try it with some morels (if you were lucky enough to have found them already) and toast the history that lead to its production and location.
Cheers! JHW
