Roads & Weather

Roads & Weather

The weather can change on a dime in Jackson Hole as thunderstorms roll across the Tetons in the summer bringing much-needed rain and blizzards blow in from all directions in the winter dropping fresh powder ripe for skiing. But severe thunder and snowstorms can pose dangers for travelers.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation updates its Web site throughout the day so that drivers are aware of road conditions and closures. A webcam on top of Teton Pass and electronic signs in the towns of Jackson and Wilson also alert drivers to laws requiring chains on tires or banning tractor-trailers. On Planet Jackson Hole's Web site, visitors will also find a webcam showing conditions in town.

To learn more about current or future weather conditions in and around Jackson Hole, visitors can turn to several Web sites, local papers or radio stations to hear forecasts and predicted snow accumulation. Local ski areas list forecasts and recent snow accumulation on their Web sites and hotlines so that skiers can plan accordingly. There is also an avalanche center operated by the Bridger-Teton National Forest, which provides comprehensive information about avalanche danger in Jackson Hole.
